The Opportunity

Banff Centre is a post-secondary learning institution with a mission to bring artists, leaders, and communities together to create, collaborate, share, envision, learn and be inspired. Under this mandate, a range of artform and interdisciplinary residential programs are offered to artists at all stages of their careers from Canada and across the world. Most of the programs involve free and/or ticketed events open to the public and Banff Centre also presents a range of curated events outside the arts program areas such as the Banff International String Competition and Festival.

The Manager, BISQC/F is responsible for the planning and delivery of all administrative and logistic aspects of the Banff International String Quartet Competition (BIQSC) and the Banff International String Quartet Festival (BISQF).

The Banff International String Quartet Competition is a triannual event and one of the leading international music competitions. The Banff International String Quartet Festival takes place in the ‘off’ years between competitions and celebrates the community, music, and musicians connected to Banff Centre and the Banff International String Quartet Competition.

The Manager, BISQC/F will plan and communicate effectively with other Banff Centre departments, external clients including donors, concert presenters, and other partners as well as BISQC/F participants including quartets, jury members, international agents, special guests and audience members.

This role reports to the Director, Banff Centre Presents for the overall Banff Centre planning, execution, and evaluation of BISQC/F and takes direction from and provides support to the Artistic Director of BISQC/F. Consulting and working with each Director on a day to day basis dependent upon the area of update, need, and requirements the Manager BISQC/F ultimately translates the vision of the Artistic Director and operational realities delivered by the Director Banff Centre Presents into concrete and deliverable plans for the competition and festival.

This position has one permanent position as a direct report, BISQC Coordinator, and one contract position as a direct report, BISQC Coordinator (Contract, requiring renewal April 1, 2027), as well as an additional contracted staff position in the lead-up to the festival and/or competition.

Roles And Responsibilities

Plans, executes and delivers all administrative and logistic aspects of the Banff International String Quartet Competition and Festival, ensuring all work timeline duties and deadlines are met.
Manages all logistics for the competition including quartet communication, repertoire confirmation and preparations, preliminary jury adjudications, competition jury, special guests, media and streaming confirmations, competition vendors and partners, overall schedule, and travel arrangements.
Manages all logistics for the festival including artist communication and contracts, overall festival schedule, audience experience, repertoire confirmation and preparations, media, recording, and streaming relationships, and travel arrangements.
Manages all ancillary BISQC/F programs, including, but not limited to: Quartet in the Community, Rolston/Szekely program, competition lecture series, festival events and alumni concert.
Undertakes all planning and delivery of the winning quartet’s career development prize package, including tours with the support of Touring Agents for North America and Europe, recording contracts and residency development.
Plans and delivers BISQ Competition prize packages, including the DC Anderson Family Foundation prize.
Negotiates partnerships with presenters, regional, national, and international. Maintains and develops relationships on behalf of Banff Centre with the World Federation of International Music competitions.
Works with the Development Department to maintain existing and build new donor relations, research other funding possibilities, and explore grant opportunities.
Alongside the Director, Banff Centre Presents, works with the Marketing Department to maintain existing and identify new sponsorship opportunities.
With the Director, Banff Centre Presents, collaborates with Marketing and Communications on the development of an effective marketing and communications content dissemination plan in service of both the competition and festival.
Acts as the lead with production areas (stage/live performance and video/sounds capture) ensuring all production and broad cast resources are confirmed and scheduled for the competition and festival.
Ensures all required contracts and releases are executed and returned.
Ensures all BISQC/F activity falls within sustainable financial parameters set by Director, Banff Centre Presents and based on funding cycles. Assumes accountability for all BISQC/F expenses, reviews budget, and revises forecasts with Director, Banff Centre Presents.
Contributes to the development of a strategic and financial plan for the future BISQC/F in conjunction with Director, Banff Centre Presents and Artistic Director, BISQC/F.
Is the main point for communication and correspondence with special guests and VIP audience members as needed.
Develops and executes the BISQC/F volunteer program.
Prepares and distributes BISQC/F overall schedule and specific agendas of activities/concerts and lectures.
Ensures all BISQC/F activity operates in accordance with the collective agreement.
Other duties as assigned.

Safety Responsibilities

Providing the management support and leadership necessary for the overall implementation and execution of Banff Centre’s safety policy within their areas of responsibility.
Implementing, training, and posting rules pertaining to safe work practices and job procedures at their work sites.
Incorporating adequate provisions for safe working practices and conditions in operational policies and procedures and in programs and projects.
Monitoring and evaluating safety performance within their areas of responsibility and recommending measures to bring about improvement.
Planning and executing all activities in a manner that promotes compliance with Banff Centre’s safety policies.
Ensuring that individuals in their area of assignment are given adequate direction, training and instruction in the safe performance of their work, and that it is performed without undue risk.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Fosters collaboration between different departments where appropriate to ensure smooth communication and efficient workflows, ultimately leading to improved overall team performance.
Proactively navigates conflict between team members to a positive resolution where all individuals are respected (supported by Human Resources as required).
Contributes to the overall success of Banff Centre by participating in internal committees as required and interprets the impact of decisions and policies from these groups to the management team.

Qualifications and Educational Requirements

5+ years project management/event producing experience.
University degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience and proven success with organizing events.
Proven programming experience, event or culture-based.
Knowledge and experience with classical/chamber music is considered an asset.
Effective interpersonal skills used to build relationships, work cooperatively and interact with a range of stakeholders.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong organizational skills used to effectively manage an environment with competing demands and expectations.
Applies good management principles in an artistic environment.
Has an ability to formulate long and short-range goals, while anticipating and responding to flexible program needs.
More than one language is considered an asset.

Employment Terms and Benefits

In accordance with the terms of employment governing Management/PSP employees, this is a salaried, fulltime position, subject to a 6-month probationary period.
The salary range for this position is $59,495 to $88,346 annually, based on experience.
