Original job description

Barr Engineering and Environmental Science Canada is seeking a geotechnical engineer to join our innovative and collaborative team of 90+ geotechnical engineers and geologists. In this hybrid role, you will work on a variety of geotechnical projects that involve traditional geotechnical and civil analysis and design related to mining, dams, and oil sands, among other areas.

The ideal candidate for this position is intrinsically motivated and emphasizes client service. They enjoy working independently and as part of a team, using their technical ability and project management expertise for a variety of projects. They are flexible in working with their project teams and are willing to occasionally modify schedules to meet project deadlines and/or client needs. This person is also relationship-focused, as the role involves serving both internal and external clients.

Your impact – key responsibilities

  • Field support: Perform geotechnical field investigations, assign geotechnical laboratory tests, analyze lab and field data, and support development of geotechnical reports. Perform fieldwork such as construction observation, instrumentation installation and monitoring, and field oversight and inspections.
  • Project management support: Assist in the planning, coordination, and execution of projects. Help ensure project milestones are met and provide regular updates to project managers and clients. Prepare proposals and cost estimates for geotechnical investigations and design work.
  • Technical analysis: Perform engineering investigation and design support tasks under the direction of more senior engineering professionals from the conceptual phase through design.
  • Geotechnical and civil analysis: Complete design related to foundations, slope stability and stabilization, seepage, settlement, earth retention, and dams.
  • Mentorship: Provide support through training/mentorship for other geotechnical engineering team members.

About the opportunity

  • Work location: A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position can be based in either our Calgary or Saskatoon office, with the expectation of visiting the Barr office at least once per month.
  • Travel expectation: Up to 25 percent of the time, with an average 5 - 10 days of continuous jobsite presence
  • Work environment: Ability to work in locations that feature rough terrain typical of construction sites, with limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities.
  • Physical requirements for the role may include lifting or moving field testing equipment. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

About you – required core competencies

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in geotechnical engineering, geological engineering, or civil engineering with a geotechnical emphasis. Graduate degree in geotechnical engineering preferred.
  • Experience: 5+ years of relevant experience. Strong technical skills in a wide range of geotechnical analysis and design disciplines. Some project management experience preferred.
  • Travel: Willingness and ability to travel regularly.
  • Software: Geotechnical software programs, including Geostudio, Rocscience, LPile, APile, gINT or BoreDM, or FLAC
  • Driver’s license: Possession of a current, valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
  • Professional licensure: Must have P.Eng license or ability and willingness to obtain one.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in Canada without the need for sponsorship by Barr Canada, now or in the future.

Compensation: Anticipated range of $86,000 - $100,000 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance.
