Job Description

PRINCIPAL, BUSINESS CAPABILITY & TRANSFORMATION DESIGN

Information Technology

Victoria or Vancouver Lower Mainland

BC Ferries is embarking on a bold, multi-year transformation of our technology and the way we work. This evolution is focused on strengthening the experience for both our customers and employees; while ensuring we continue to deliver safe, reliable, and affordable service - now and into the future.

As our vessels and terminals become increasingly connected, and we adopt modern platforms powered by advanced analytics and artificial intelligence, we’re looking for forward-thinking leaders and talented professionals who are excited by what’s possible. Leaders who not only embrace innovation, but who also know how to build, inspire, and empower teams to turn vision into reality.

If you thrive in complex, large-scale environments, enjoy driving enterprise-wide transformation, and are comfortable operating at the intersection of business strategy and technology delivery, this could be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for. Join us and play a meaningful role in shaping the future of coastal transportation - where the challenge is significant and the impact is lasting

The Opportunity

Transformation starts with asking the right questions.

As BC Ferries continues to evolve how we operate, serve our customers and support our people, we’re looking for a Principal, Business Capability & Transformation Design to help shape what comes next.

This is a senior individual contributor role for someone who can look beyond individual projects or technology solutions to understand the bigger picture: What capability do we need? Why does it matter? What needs to change? And what will it take to make that change successful? Working across the organization, you’ll partner with business leaders, subject matter experts, technology teams and corporate partners to turn complex or ambiguous business needs into clear outcomes, transformation options and practical roadmaps. You’ll help identify capability gaps, connect initiatives to strategy and benefits, surface dependencies and readiness considerations, and ensure business-led initiatives are well defined before moving into detailed solution design or delivery.

You’ll bring structure to complexity, challenge assumptions constructively, and help leaders make informed decisions about where and how to invest in transformation. If you enjoy solving complex business problems, connecting strategy to action, and helping organizations think differently about how they work, we’d love to hear from you.

The Role

Reporting to the Executive Director, Business Transformation, you contribute value through key areas of oversight such as:

Shape Business Capabilities

  • Partnering with business leaders and subject matter experts to identify current and future capabilities needed to achieve strategic and enterprise priorities;
  • Developing capability maps, heat maps, maturity assessments and high-level roadmaps, and connecting capabilities to strategic outcomes, KPIs, customer and employee experience, operational performance, risk, resilience and benefits;
  • Assessing capability gaps, overlaps, dependencies, fragmentation and areas of underinvestment across business domains, distinguishing between process, technology, data, roles, governance, policy, operating model and change needs;
  • Supporting Business Sponsors in defining what capability is being built, why it matters, who owns the value case and how benefits will be realized;
  • Translating ambiguous business demand into clear capability statements and outcome-based requirements, while challenging assumptions to ensure initiatives address the underlying business need rather than a pre-selected technology solution.

Design Transformation Options

  • Leading structured discovery with Business Sponsors and subject matter experts to clarify problems, opportunities, desired outcomes, constraints, decision points and measures of success;
  • Translating capability gaps into transformation themes, options, scenarios and sequencing considerations;
  • Developing business-led transformation options that consider people, process, data, technology, governance, service delivery, vendors and change;
  • Partnering with Enterprise Architecture and Technology Leads to explore feasible solution pathways while maintaining clear accountability for technical architecture decisions;
  • Identifying cross-functional dependencies, integration points, readiness gaps, duplication and sequencing issues across programs, platforms and business domains;
  • Preparing capability maps, problem statements, option papers, decision briefs, dependency views, transformation roadmaps and executive-ready recommendations.

Enable Readiness & Better Decisions

  • Supporting centralized intake and portfolio processes by assessing strategic alignment, capability impact, scope, readiness, dependencies, risks, expected outcomes and value;
  • Contributing to initiative charters, business cases, value hypotheses, benefits logic, capability impact assessments and high-level delivery sequencing;
  • Identifying unresolved business decisions, overlaps, duplication and cross-portfolio dependencies before initiatives move into formal planning, procurement or delivery;
  • Advising the Executive Director, Business Sponsors, Technology Leads and governance forums on initiative readiness, dependencies and trade-offs;
  • Facilitating workshops and working sessions that move stakeholders from symptoms and requests toward clear outcomes, decisions and capability choices;
  • Building strong relationships across the organization while providing objective challenge, and establishing practical, repeatable approaches for capability analysis, transformation design, value framing and business readiness.

What You Bring To The Team

  • A degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Information Systems, Operations, Engineering, Finance or a related discipline
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in business transformation, enterprise business analysis, business capability planning, operating model design, business process improvement, strategic planning, portfolio/intake or technology-enabled change
  • 7+ years of experience partnering with business and technology leaders to shape initiatives from early concept through business case, intake, planning, governance and delivery handoff
  • 7+ years of experience developing executive-level materials such as capability maps, option papers, decision briefs, roadmap views, problem statements, benefits logic and stakeholder-ready narratives
  • Strong ability to make sense of complex or ambiguous information, identify the underlying business need and bring structure to difficult problems
  • Excellent facilitation, communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage effectively with executives, business leaders, subject matter experts and technology partners
  • A strategic mindset combined with the ability to translate ideas into practical, actionable next steps
