Behind every reliable sailing is an experienced team that ensures our terminals, marine structures, and critical infrastructure are safe, maintained, and ready to operate.
We’re looking for a Terminal Technical Standards Lead to help strengthen the technical standards, policies and maintenance practices that support BC Ferries’ shore-based infrastructure.
In this role, you’ll bring engineering knowledge, regulatory insight and a practical approach to standards development. Working closely with Terminal Maintenance, Terminal Construction, Engineering and Operations teams, you'll serve as a trusted technical advisor translating complex codes and regulatory requirements into clear, consistent guidance that supports safe operations, sound asset management and quality infrastructure. Your work will help ensure terminal projects and maintenance activities meet applicable requirements while supporting consistency and continuous improvement across our terminal network.
The Role
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Maintenance Engineering, you contribute value through key areas of oversight such as:

- Researching and interpreting complex regulatory frameworks, codes and engineering standards. Translating them into written practical guidance suited to BC Ferries’ operating environment;
- Establishing documentation, tracking and review processes to monitor regulatory compliance, address variances and support audit requirements.
- Working with Engineering, Operations and departmental subject matter experts to identify standards gaps, develop consistent practices and support emerging initiatives;
- Supporting the implementation of change request processes, technical standards and policies across terminal teams, monitoring adoption and identifying opportunities for improvement;
- Collaborating with Engineering Standards & Asset Services to align deliverables with corporate standards, policy frameworks and change management practices;
- Integrating asset management principles into terminal projects, maintenance practices and technical standards.
- Serving as a subject matter expert on applicable codes, regulatory requirements, internal policies and technical standards, advising managers and stakeholders on implications, decisions and required actions;
- Communicating technical and regulatory requirements clearly through guidance documents, briefings, presentations and other communication channels tailored to the audience;
- Building effective working relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders to support the interpretation and application of statutory and code requirements;
- Providing technical guidance, training and support to employees, helping strengthen technical knowledge, consistent practices and adherence to established corporate frameworks.
- A four-year undergraduate degree or master’s degree in Marine Structural, Structural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering, along with experience developing technical standards
- Successful completion of a two-year technologist accreditation with experience writing technical standards will be considered
- Registration as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC) is considered an asset
- 4-6 years of experience in a technical construction or engineering role, including one to three years of experience writing technical standards
- Knowledge of relevant engineering codes and standards for shore-based marine infrastructure, such as building codes, bridge codes, ferry boarding facility standards, structural steel and concrete design standards, the Canadian Electrical Code, PIANC guidance, civil infrastructure specifications and applicable municipal bylaws
- The ability to independently research, interpret and assess complex technical and regulatory requirements and translate them into clear, practical standards and recommendations
- Strong technical writing, analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop, review and maintain policies, standards and guidance documents
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to explain technical requirements to diverse audiences and navigate discussions with professionalism and tact
- A proactive, collaborative demeanour with sound judgement and the ability to manage competing priorities and move work forward with minimal supervision
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly advanced in Excel and Word
