What you'll do
The Engineering Division Manager leads and oversees Generation Stations Mechanical Engineering Division across 5 teams that together comprise approximately 50 professional, technical, and administrative staff. The role provides strategic leadership, technical direction, and expert advice to senior management on mechanical engineering matters related to BC Hydro’s generation assets. The position is also responsible for managing external engineering consultants retained to support the delivery of capital and maintenance projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provides leadership to the Generation Stations Mechanical Engineering Division within Engineering Design, delivering mechanical engineering services in support of BC Hydro’s hydroelectric generating stations and dam safety programs. The Division’s areas of expertise include Balance of Plant, Heavy Equipment, Fire Protection, and Power Unit engineering.
- Establishes and executes the Division’s technical, operational, and strategic direction in alignment with BC Hydro’s mission, vision, values, and corporate priorities.
- Leads and develops a high-performing engineering team by fostering technical excellence, leadership capability, innovation, and collaboration.
- Supports staff in effectively contributing to multidisciplinary teams responsible for delivering, or overseeing as Owner’s Engineers, complex capital upgrades, refurbishments, replacements, maintenance programs, and emergency repairs.
- Promotes a strong culture of safety, engineering rigor, continuous improvement, and sound business decision-making.
- Accountable for the Division’s operational performance, including the development and management of business plans, budgets, and resource strategies. Ensures the efficient and cost-effective allocation of resources, evaluates project feasibility relative to available capacity and funding, and balances workloads across the Division. Establishes performance expectations, defines competency requirements, and implements recruitment, succession, training, and professional development strategies to sustain long-term organizational capability.
- Serves as a senior technical advisor and subject matter expert for engineering programs and projects, providing guidance on engineering solutions, standards, specifications, risk management, and quality assurance practices. Monitors industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices, and drives the adoption of innovations that enhance asset performance, reliability, safety, and value.
- Develops and maintains strong relationships with equipment vendors, engineering consultants, and external service providers, while fostering effective partnerships across Engineering, Dam Safety, Capital Infrastructure Project Delivery, Operations, Asset Management, and other business groups.
- Contributes to enterprise-wide engineering initiatives, including the implementation of Safety by Design and Risk Tolerance Framework principles, the development and sustainment of post-disaster damage assessment capabilities, and the continuous advancement of engineering standards, governance, and professional practice, including support for design practice leadership activities.
- Actively participates in the management and leadership of Generation Engineering as a member of the Generation Engineering Management team (GEMT) contributing to goal setting, performance evaluations, and overall delivery of our engineering services. Proactively identifies both: opportunities for improving project delivery performance and issues potentially impeding meeting delivery expectations and works with GEMT to continually improve our performance.
What you bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline; advanced degrees are considered an asset.
- Registered, or eligible for registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC.
- Minimum of fifteen (15) years of progressive experience in a relevant engineering discipline, including significant experience supporting hydropower generation projects within a utility or comparable industrial environment.
- Demonstrated experience leading and delivering hydroelectric generating station upgrade, refurbishment, and modernization projects.
- Demonstrated ability to provide and encourage innovative solutions to technical and business problems.
- Proven ability to exercise sound engineering, business, and risk-based judgment, particularly in complex and high-consequence environments.
- Strong leadership skills, with demonstrated success in people management, relationship building, conflict resolution, and stakeholder engagement.
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively across technical and non-technical audiences.
- Proven ability to build credibility and strong working relationships within their teams, especially when new to the team.
- Proven ability to build credibility and strong working relationships with senior leaders, provide strategic direction on complex issues, and deliver expert technical advice to support informed decision-making and timely resolution of critical challenges.
