The Electrical Site Engineering team provides technical expertise in electrical generating equipment, including generators, and associated balance-of-plant electrical systems. The Specialist Engineer will be responsible for developing and overseeing technical engineering solutions, supporting or leading field construction and commissioning activities, and ensuring that engineering requirements, industry standards, and operational objectives are met.

Working closely with project engineering teams, maintenance personnel, contractors, and equipment manufacturers, the Specialist Electrical Engineer will help resolve complex technical issues, provide engineering guidance, and support the safe, reliable, and efficient build of BC Hydro's generating assets.

What you'll do

  • At the heart of the construction and commissioning, you use your technical expertise in generators and electrical power systems to resolve complex technical queries and engineering challenges, bringing together design engineers, field personnel, and contractors to ensure successful project execution.
  • Review and provide technical input into engineering designs, equipment specifications, procurement documents, constructability reviews, and testing and commissioning plans for generator and reactive equipment projects.
  • You provide technical leadership for the inspection, assessment, refurbishment, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of hydroelectric generators and associated electrical systems.
  • Perform engineering reviews and provide technical oversight to ensure that generator equipment, installations, and construction activities comply with approved drawings, specifications, contract requirements, applicable codes, and industry standards.
  • Ensure that generator testing, inspections, and commissioning activities are appropriately planned, witnessed, documented, and completed in accordance with approved procedures. Support the development and review of test reports, technical findings, and corrective action plans.
  • Maintain strong relationships and liaise with multidisciplinary engineering teams, stations field operations, maintenance groups, and external consultants to support the timely resolution of technical issues and ensure engineering requirements are met in the field.
  • Collaborate with project and construction management teams to identify and address hazards associated with electrical equipment, generator installations and, commissioning activities, supporting a strong culture of safety and environmental responsibility.
  • Prepare technical engineering reports, design change notices, engineering calculations, technical specifications, and recommendations related to generators and power generation equipment.
  • Provide technical leadership within High voltage and generation equipment by developing and mentoring less experienced staff, sharing specialized knowledge, providing engineering advice, and supporting the continuous improvement of engineering practices and capabilities in the team.
  • Use sound engineering judgment and experience to evaluate technical alternatives and make decisions that consider equipment reliability, safety, constructability, operability, lifecycle costs, and project schedules.
  • Provide expertise on applicable electrical engineering standards, policies, practices, procedures, and industry developments related to hydroelectric generators and power generation systems.
  • May support equipment procurement, vendor technical evaluations, factory acceptance testing, delivery inspections, and technical resolution of equipment deficiencies to ensure project requirements are met.
  • May be required to initiate and maintain engineering records related to testing and commissioning, equipment deficiencies, technical risks, project progress, design changes, and potential contract claims.

What you bring

  • An Electrical Engineering degree from a recognized institution, preferably with a specialization or significant experience in power systems, electrical machines, power generation, or related disciplines.
  • Ten (10+) years or more of experience in electrical engineering, preferably involving hydroelectric power generation, generators, electrical equipment, and large infrastructure projects.

Candidates with fewer than 10 years of experience and/or do not possess the full qualifications may be considered for a lower position appropriate to their level of experience.

  • Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in the Province of British Columbia.
  • Fully developed technical knowledge in hydroelectric generator engineering, including generator design and construction, stator and rotor systems, excitation systems, generator protection, electrical testing, condition assessment, and maintenance methodologies.
  • Strong knowledge of generator electrical systems, including synchronous machines, excitation and voltage regulation systems, generator circuit breakers, grounding systems, and associated protection and control equipment.
  • Knowledge of generator testing and diagnostic methodologies, electrical performance testing, and other applicable condition assessment techniques.
  • Knowledge of applicable electrical engineering standards, codes, and industry practices, including relevant IEEE, IEC, CSA, and utility-specific requirements.
  • Ability to analyze and resolve challenging and unusual engineering problems with considerable independence, understanding the implications of technical decisions on equipment reliability, safety, costs, constructability, operability, and maintainability.
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and evaluate complex technical studies, generator test results, equipment condition assessment data, and engineering reports. Demonstrated ability to define and develop criteria for technical issue evaluation and resolution.
  • Demonstrated technical writing and presentation skills, excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. You are sought out as a coach, mentor, and team builder.
  • Demonstrated ongoing professional development through self-study, technical training, participation in professional engineering organizations, and continuous improvement of technical knowledge.
  • Knowledge of project management, including cost control, project administration, contract management, procurement, and project execution practices.
