What you'll do
The successful applicant will play a key role in supporting the Electrical Safety Team, which is responsible for ensuring that BC Hydro’s electrical infrastructure, work practices, and public interfaces meet the highest standards of safety, regulatory compliance, and operational effectiveness. This team leads the development and sustainment of the Electrical Safety Program, provides technical governance, interprets regulatory requirements, and supports major enterprise wide initiatives. As part of this mandate, the team also manages all public safety responsibilities related to electrical hazards that may affect trades workers, first responders, third party workers, and the general public. The new team member will contribute to this integrated safety function by assisting with program development, regulatory interpretation, stakeholder engagement, and the delivery of safety initiatives that protect both workers and the public.
- Support BC Hydro’s Electrical Safety Program, including Work Protection Practices (WPP) and Power System Safety Protection (PSSP). plus support the implementation of a new initiatives.
- Interpret and apply WSBC OHSR Parts 10 and 19, as well as public safety related legislation, ensuring all requirements are integrated into BC Hydro’s electrical safety programs.
- Provide subject matter expertise in electric shock, arc flash, arc blast, and other electrical hazards affecting workers and the public.
- Work with applicable business partner(s) to respond to public/third party safety risks associated with BC Hydro’s infrastructure, to ensure safe interactions with power lines and electrical equipment,
- Lead the development of public safety training materials and coordinate with external training service providers for delivery,
- Perform outreach and prepare/deliver communications for trades workers, first responders, and third parties working near electrical infrastructure.
- Maintain and update electrical safety governance documents, standards, and the annual public safety strategy.
- Analyze electrical safety incidents and data to refine outreach strategies, improve program effectiveness, and reduce risk exposure.
- Produce and maintain public/third party related electrical safety materials for internal and external audiences.
- Build and maintain relationships with key external stakeholders such as BC 1 Call, industry associations, and first responder organizations.
- Respond to complex electrical public safety inquiries and provide authoritative technical guidance.
- Coordinate cross functional project teams, track program performance, and oversee work delivered by internal staff and external consultants.
- Collaborate with project initiators, business groups, Technical Working Groups, and Safety Leadership to embed electrical and public safety considerations into operational work and project planning.
- Support Operations, Asset Management, and engineering groups with electrical public safety risk assessments, standards development, and program governance.
- Perform technical writing and document control for all electrical and public safety program materials.
- Support the incident investigations team with technical support as required.
What you bring
- A university degree or diploma in occupational health & safety, occupational hygiene, engineering, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- A minimum of five (5) years’ experience working in the utility environment, preferably in electrical, mechanical, construction, trades or process efficiency areas.
- Strong understanding of WorkSafeBC legislation, regulation, and policies related to workplace safety and hygiene.
- Excellent writing, communication, and presentation skills with the ability to influence without authority.
- Extensive, demonstrable, and practical knowledge and experience working with, or providing safety support to working with electrical safety hazards.
- Strong knowledge of engagement processes and techniques and ability to develop effective relationships with key decision makers, unions and regulatory agencies.
- Strong leadership, planning, and project management skills.
- Strong critical thinking, planning, organizational, and analytical skills.
- Strong knowledge of utility operations is an asset.

What else you should know
- The headquarters for this position can be based out of Edmonds, Vernon, Prince George or Terrace based on operational need and subject to space availability.
- Please note a condition of employment is that a valid Class 5 Driver's license is held and maintained in good standing.
- Must be willing and able to travel across the province. Location: Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada,V3N 4X8.
