Based in Victoria, BC, this role puts you at the center of BCI's responsible investing program, where proxy voting decisions and ESG analysis help guide how C$165 billion in capital markets and credit investments is stewarded across global markets. The Senior Analyst/Associate, ESG will gain hands on exposure to proxy voting, portfolio company engagement, and ESG integration across asset classes, working alongside a collaborative, multidisciplinary team supporting one of Canada's largest institutional investors.

WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH

The Capital Markets & Credit Investments (CM&CI) department manages C$165B of capital markets and credit investments (56% of total net AUM of BCI). The department invests globally across Credit, Equities, Fixed Income, Derivatives, and Absolute Return Strategies, with investment teams located in BCI's global offices in Victoria, Vancouver, New York, and London. As a leader in responsible investing, CM&CI actively integrates ESG factors into investment analysis and decision-making processes across all strategies.

ESG

BCI partners with 32 public sector clients in British Columbia to generate investment returns that help provide a financially secure future to their members. As part of prudent investment management, BCI aims to mitigate long-term financial risks that environmental, social, and governance (ESG) matters present. ESG considerations are integrated into investment analysis, decisions, and processes consistently across the corporation. The team has built strong stewardship capabilities as engaging with portfolio companies and standard setters is key to our success. The team consists of multi-disciplinary professionals who support all asset classes on integration and asset management and serve as subject matter experts for our clients.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Senior Analyst/Associate, ESG works under the supervision of the Director, ESG to support BCI’s ESG integration and stewardship programs. The Senior Analyst/Associate gathers data, conducts analysis and generates reports related to BCI’s ESG activities in Capital Markets and Credit Investments. These responsibilities include analysis related to the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance of the equity, fixed income and partnership portfolios, proxy voting and analysis, and reporting to clients.

WHAT YOU BRING

Must have:

Relevant university degree complemented by research/industry experience
At the Senior Analyst level: 2-3 years’ experience in a financial organization or related function with knowledge of the pension fund industry
At the Associate level: 3-5 years’ experience in a financial organization or related function with knowledge of the pension fund industry
A passionate interest in ESG issues and understanding of their risk/return impacts
Demonstrated proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint and Excel) and familiarity with AI tools
Familiarity with investment software applications
Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a team environment
Ability to adhere to tight timelines and work well in pressure situations
Impeccable attention to detail
Demonstrated ability to identify opportunities for process improvement and take initiative to implement changes as needed
Diplomacy and tact with strong interpersonal skills and judgment

Preferred:
Graduate degree and/ or enrolment in/working towards the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) program
Other professional designation such as CPA, LLB
Experience with proxy voting in an institutional investor setting

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Researches and extracts data from various sources and platforms
Performs quantitative and qualitative analysis of company ESG performance, including appropriate peer benchmarking
Conducts research on new and evolving ESG matters
Reviews, analyses and executes proxy voting decisions
Potential to engage at senior levels with portfolio companies on stewardship priorities
Responds to a variety of requests from direct supervisors and team members for assistance or research to direct and collaborative company engagement, including identifying engagement objectives and recommendations for improvement
Assists in responding to client inquiries and the preparation of client documents
Supports the preparation of ESG reports that summarize proxy voting activity, direct engagement, collaborative engagement and public policy activity
Assists in maintaining the team’s digital files and databases
Occasionally performs other administrative tasks for the team such as taking notes, and booking meeting with external parties

WHERE YOU WILL WORK

This role is based in our downtown Victoria, BC office. BCI is an in-person, collaborative organization with the flexibility to work remotely up to one day per week.

SALARY RANGE

The annualized salary range for this Victoria based role at the Sr. Analyst level is CAD $93,000 - $110,000.

The annualized salary range for this role at the Associate level is CAD $106,000 - $128,000.

(This role may be filled at either the Sr. Analyst or Associate level depending on the successful candidate's education and work experience. We welcome applicants across this full range of experience.)

The base salary will consider factors such as the individual's skill set, experience, and internal equity. We aim for actual pay to be around the market median for expected performance and the upper quartile for excellent performance. Actual salaries may vary based on experience and expertise.
