Original job description
BDO is a firm built on a foundation of positive relationships with our people and our clients. Each day, our professionals provide exceptional service, helping clients with advice and insight they can trust. In turn, we offer an award-winning environment that fosters a people-first culture with a high priority on your personal and professional growth.
Your Opportunity
Our Toronto office is looking for a Consultant to join its Strategy, Value Creation & Analytics practice within Financial Advisory Services. This role sits at the intersection of business, data, analytics and artificial intelligence. The successful candidate will combine strong technical capabilities with business acumen and client facing skills to help organizations solve complex problems, improve decision making and adopt modern data and AI enabled ways of working. This is a new role.
The ideal candidate will be intellectually curious, technically strong and comfortable learning and applying new technologies. Using modern AI tools effectively is an expected part of day to day work. The candidate should be able to use AI to improve research, analysis, coding, problem solving, documentation and solution development, while applying professional judgment and validating outputs.
As part of the team, you will support client and stakeholder needs while helping organizations advance their data, analytics and AI capabilities. You will translate complex business and financial requirements into practical technical solutions and communicate technical concepts in a way that is accessible to business stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Work with clients and internal stakeholders to understand business problems, define analytical requirements and translate them into practical data, analytics and AI solutions.
- Apply business analytics to research, analyze and interpret complex information, identify meaningful patterns and develop actionable insights and strategic recommendations.
- Identify opportunities where AI, automation or advanced analytics can improve existing business processes, analytical workflows or client solutions.
- Design, prototype and implement AI enabled solutions and workflows where appropriate, including solutions using large language models, APIs, structured prompting, retrieval based approaches, workflow automation and other emerging AI technologies.
- Develop analytics applications, reporting solutions and decision support tools using Power BI, Tableau and other visualization or analytics technologies.
- Work hands on with data using SQL, Python, Power Query, Excel and related technologies to extract, transform, integrate, analyze and validate structured and unstructured data.
- Design, build and maintain scalable data transformation and ETL processes that support analytics, reporting, AI applications and business decision making.
- Apply statistical analysis, machine learning and other analytical techniques where appropriate, and translate technical outputs into practical business insights and usable tools.
- Develop KPIs, metrics, analytical frameworks and data models that enable organizations to monitor performance and make more informed decisions.
- Assess data quality, identify gaps or inconsistencies and apply appropriate validation and quality control procedures before information is used for analytical or AI driven decision making.
- Collaborate with clients to define project requirements through interviews, workshops, research and data analysis, and contribute to project plans, timelines and implementation approaches.
- Work closely with technical and non-technical stakeholders, clients, and other teams to support the successful implementation and adoption of data and AI solutions.
- Communicate analytical findings and technical concepts clearly through presentations, reports, dashboards and other client ready deliverables.
- Stay current on developments in analytics, artificial intelligence and data technologies, and proactively evaluate how new capabilities can be applied to client and internal business problems.
- Apply responsible AI practices, including appropriate consideration of data privacy, confidentiality, security, accuracy, explainability and human oversight when using AI technologies.
- You demonstrate BDO's core values through all aspects of your work: Integrity, Respect and Collaboration.
- You develop a strong understanding of your clients' industries, business models, challenges and opportunities.
- You combine strong technical execution with practical business thinking rather than treating analytics or technology as an end in itself.
- You are comfortable working directly with data and technology and can independently investigate, troubleshoot and solve technical problems.
- You critically evaluate analytical and AI generated outputs rather than accepting results without appropriate validation.
- You communicate complex analytical and technical concepts clearly to both technical and non technical stakeholders.
- You identify opportunities to improve the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of client delivery through data, automation, analytics and AI.
- You consistently produce high quality, accurate and well structured work.
- You actively contribute ideas, share knowledge and support the development of the team's data, analytics and AI capabilities.
- You continuously grow your expertise through learning, experimentation and professional development.
- A bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Business Analytics, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, Economics or a related quantitative field.
- Approximately 0 to 2 years of relevant experience in data analytics, data science, business analytics, technology consulting or a related field.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills combined with business acumen and an interest in understanding how organizations operate.
- Strong hands on proficiency with SQL and Python or R.
- Strong proficiency with Power BI or comparable business intelligence and visualization technologies.
- Strong proficiency with Excel and familiarity with Power Query and other data transformation technologies.
- Demonstrated ability to manipulate, analyze and validate complex datasets using a combination of SQL, Python, Excel and analytical tools.
- Practical experience using generative AI tools to support professional work, with an understanding of how to structure effective prompts, provide appropriate context, evaluate responses and validate outputs.
- Familiarity with large language models and modern AI concepts, including prompt design, APIs, retrieval augmented generation, AI agents or workflow automation. Deep specialization in all of these areas is not required, but candidates should demonstrate the ability and willingness to learn and apply new AI technologies.
- Familiarity with analytical development practices such as version control, reusable code, documentation, testing and quality assurance is considered an asset.
- Experience with cloud data or AI platforms such as Microsoft Azure, AWS or Google Cloud is considered an asset.
- Exposure to financial fundamentals, financial analysis or financial modeling is considered an asset.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to business audiences.
- Comfortable working directly with clients and stakeholders to understand requirements, present findings and build trusted relationships.
- Strong initiative and the ability to independently investigate unfamiliar problems, learn new technologies and propose practical solutions.
- Motivated, detail oriented, rigorous and comfortable working in a fast moving consulting environment.
- An interest in the continued development of data, analytics and artificial intelligence, with a demonstrated willingness to continuously learn as technologies and methodologies evolve.
