Original job description

Sleep Country Canada is looking for a Junior Cloud Engineer to play a critical role in supporting day-to-day operations of the organization’s cloud infrastructure, helping ensure systems are reliable, secure, and efficient. This role offers hands-on experience with cloud technologies, monitoring, and automation, while providing opportunities to learn and grow under the guidance of senior team members in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

In this current open role you will:

  • Assist in deploying and maintaining cloud infrastructure across multiple platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) to meet business needs.
  • Configure and support cloud resources (compute, storage, networking, etc.) following established designs and best practices. Perform routine environment maintenance tasks (such as system updates and patching) to keep cloud systems current, secure, and performing optimally.
  • Monitor cloud systems using standard tools and alerts to ensure uptime, performance, and capacity.
  • Respond to incidents and support requests, troubleshooting straightforward infrastructure issues and resolving them or escalating to senior engineers when necessary.
  • Participate in the 24/7 on-call rotation (with senior team support) to provide after-hours incident response, following defined runbooks and procedures to restore services and minimize downtime in line with service level objectives.
  • Contribute to automation efforts by writing and maintaining basic scripts (e.g., PowerShell, Python, Bash) and assisting in managing CI/CD pipelines for cloud deployments.
  • Utilize infrastructure-as-code tools and template libraries (under supervision) to provision cloud resources in a repeatable manner.
  • Work closely with DevOps and development teams to ensure that build and deployment pipelines function smoothly, helping to troubleshoot pipeline issues and implement minor enhancements to improve consistency and reduce manual work.
  • Engage in ongoing learning and professional development to expand cloud engineering skills and keep pace with evolving technologies.
  • Proactively seek to gain deeper expertise in core cloud platforms and tools, including cross-training on relevant systems used by the team.
  • Stay abreast of emerging best practices (e.g., new automation techniques, AI-assisted operations tools) and participates in team discussions on improving processes.
  • Suggest improvements to operational workflows or tooling based on learnings, and gradually takes on more complex tasks as proficiency increases.

The Qualifications and experience we like to see:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems or a related field.
  •  Approximately 2–4 years of hands-on experience in IT infrastructure or cloud engineering/support roles. Prior exposure to production cloud environments and operational support processes is required, with demonstrated ability to learn and take on increasing responsibilities over time.
  • Working knowledge of at least one major public cloud platform (such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform).
  • Familiarity with fundamental cloud services (compute, storage, networking, databases) and basic cloud architecture concepts (e.g., virtual machines, VPC/VNet, security groups).
  • Understanding of customary cloud security and backup practices. Openness to learning multiple cloud environments and new cloud services as needed.
  • Some experience with scripting and automation (e.g., writing simple scripts in Python, PowerShell, Bash) to assist with repetitive tasks or deployments.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and version control (e.g., exposure to Jenkins, Git, Azure DevOps or similar tools) for software build or deployment processes.
  • Basic understanding of infrastructure-as-code (IaC) concepts (e.g., CloudFormation, Terraform) and a desire to develop deeper expertise in automating cloud infrastructure management.
  • Experience with system monitoring and support in a cloud or IT infrastructure context, with basic skills in using monitoring/alerting tools and interpreting system logs or metrics to detect and diagnose issues.
  • Able to follow standard operating procedures and runbooks to troubleshoot incidents methodically, demonstrating problem-solving ability for resolving common technical issues; knowing when to escalate complex problems to senior team members.
  • Comfortable working in a rotational on-call support environment, maintaining composure and attention to detail during incident response.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document activities clearly and collaborate effectively with a diverse technical team.
  • Team-oriented and coachable, receptive to feedback and guidance from more experienced colleagues.
  • Customer-service mindset in supporting internal stakeholders and ensuring user satisfaction with cloud services.
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing tools and processes; willing to embrace emerging solutions (e.g., AI-driven monitoring, automated troubleshooting) as they become part of the team’s practices.
  • Proactive in seeking out training, mentorship, and challenging assignments to build skills and advance capabilities toward more senior cloud engineering responsibilities.
  • Exposure to Google Cloud Platform (GCP) services or multi-cloud deployments.
  • Familiarity with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) or Oracle Fusion Cloud applications in an operational or support context an asset.
  • Experience supporting or integrating with eCommerce platforms (e.g., BigCommerce or similar).
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Azure cloud services in addition to primary cloud expertise.
  • Experience using modern monitoring/observability tools such as Dynatrace or Datadog for infrastructure monitoring and alerting.
