At Behaviour Interactive, we believe in giving everyone a fair shot. We embrace a diverse and creative environment where everyone is celebrated. We value folks of all ages, sex, ethnicity, colour, ethnic or national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, civil status, disability, or any other protected characteristics as per applicable law.
We are looking for a Programming Technical Lead to join a central team dedicated to developer productivity across Behaviour's productions. Members of this team are embedded in production teams for missions long enough to make a lasting impact, working alongside their programmers and technical leadership to make them faster and more effective, and then carry what they have learned to the next production. These productions range from live games to projects in development, built on Unreal Engine and Unity, and include online multiplayer titles.
As an Programming Technical Lead, you will not manage people, but you will change how teams work, improving both their productivity and the quality and stability of what they deliver.
In this role you will :
- Make the team faster and more effective. You will identify what slows the programming team down or hurts the quality and stability of its work, and address it hands-on: building or improving tools and pipelines, automating repetitive work, developing new functionality, debugging, or tracking down the hard-to-fix bugs that nobody else has been able to crack.
- Partner with the production's technical leadership. You will work closely with the technical director, the lead programmer, and the other tech leads to agree on where your efforts will have the most impact, making sure improvements support the production's roadmap rather than compete with it.
- Mentor programmers. You will help the whole programming team grow, sharing software development best practices through tech talks, workshops, pair programming, and day-to-day collaboration.
- Work across disciplines. You will collaborate with representatives of every part of game production, including artists, designers, and producers, and improve their workflows wherever programming is involved, from content pipelines to editor tools.
- Share what you learn. You will keep the central team informed of your progress, and bring back the lessons learned on each production, what worked and what did not, so that every future production benefits from them.
What we're looking for :
- A minimum of 3 years of experience as a technical lead on a game production, with at least one title shipped in that role;
- A proven track record of leading lasting technical change: earning the trust of programmers and tech leads, rallying teams around improvements, and communicating clearly with people at every level of the production;
- A true generalist profile, comfortable across a wide range of areas, with strong experience in tools, pipelines, and build systems, and ideally in gameplay, backend, and other areas;
- Strong experience with Unity and C#; experience with Unreal Engine and C++ is a strong asset;
- Experience programming online multiplayer games is a plus;
- A keen interest in how the craft of software development is evolving, and a taste for experimenting with new tools and approaches to find what actually works.
