Original job description
Field Technician (IT, Communications & AI) – Grande Prairie, AB
$80,000–$90,000+ per year with field pay · Full-time · Northern Living Allowance
Are you the kind of person who enjoys working with technology, figuring out why something isn’t connecting, and finding a better way to get the job done? Are you already comfortable using AI tools and curious about how they could improve how a business operates?
If that sounds like you, we’d like to meet you.
Benchmark Data Solutions builds the remote communications systems that keep Alberta oil and gas sites connected. Since 1998, we’ve grown to support sites across Western Canada with LEO satellite internet, private networks and cellular, two-way radio, Wi-Fi, and AI-powered site cameras.
We’re looking for a mid-level Field Technician who enjoys hands-on IT and communications work, can help customers solve problems remotely, and wants to be part of exploring what’s next for our company.
In this role, you’ll install and troubleshoot equipment on drilling and completion sites, provide remote technical support, and help us test and introduce new technologies. We’re particularly interested in someone who is comfortable using AI tools and excited to explore how they could support their own work, improve customer service, and create opportunities across Benchmark.
Location: Based out of our shop in Clairmont, just outside Grande Prairie.
Schedule: Rotational shift work. Your days will include a mix of site visits and shop time building, testing, and repairing equipment, depending on customer demand.

What you’ll do
Field installation and support
- Install, configure, and service LEO satellite systems, private internet networks, cellular boosters, portable cell towers, Wi-Fi networks, IP cameras, and wireless rig intercoms.
- Troubleshoot software, hardware, and network issues both on site and remotely.
- Respond to support calls and tickets, diagnose equipment and connectivity problems using remote tools, guide customers through solutions, and escalate issues when a site visit is needed.
- Travel to remote sites in a company truck, often 3–6 hours one way, with overnight camp or hotel stays when required.
- Climb derricks up to 160 feet when an installation requires it. Full training and fall protection gear are provided.
- Keep tickets, inventory, and safety paperwork accurate and up to date so jobs stay billable and safe.
- Use AI tools to support your work - for example, researching technical issues, exploring troubleshooting approaches, improving documentation, or finding ways to work more efficiently.
- Look for practical opportunities to use AI in field installations, diagnostics, remote support, and other areas of the company.
- Share your ideas with the team and help test new tools, technologies, and processes.
- Run structured tests during pilots, document results, flag issues, and share what you learn.
- Use sound judgment when working with AI, including checking results for accuracy and protecting customer and company information.
- A mid-level background in IT, telecommunications, networking, field technology, helpdesk, or technical support.
- Experience diagnosing computer, hardware, or network problems and explaining solutions clearly to non-technical customers.
- Experience with, or a strong interest in, both remote support and on-site field work.
- Comfort using AI tools to support work, learning, research, or problem-solving, along with an interest in discovering new ways to use them.
- Curiosity about emerging technology and a willingness to experiment, learn, and share ideas. You don’t need to be an AI expert, but you should be excited to explore its potential.
- Willingness to travel, work outdoors in all seasons, handle long field days, and take on-call shifts when needed.
- A safety-minded approach, strong communication skills, and a willingness to work as part of a team.
- A valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s licence, a clean five-year driver’s abstract, and a clear criminal record check.
- $80,000–$90,000+ per year, with field day rates that allow busy technicians to earn more.
- Northern Living Allowance.
- Company truck, phone, and laptop.
- Health and dental benefits and Group RRSP matching after three months.
- Life insurance, paid vacation, and all PPE provided.
- Paid safety training and tickets, including Fall Protection, H2S Alive, First Aid, and more.
- Hands-on training as we introduce new technologies.
- The opportunity to help shape how a growing company uses AI and other emerging tools.
- A small, Alberta-owned company where your ideas about technology and improving how we work can be heard.
