Job Title: Senior DevOps Engineer – Site Reliability Engineering (SRE)
Full-time Opportunity | Onsite in the Greater Vancouver Metropolitan Area | Salary: $113,900–$147,400/annum (depending on experience & qualifications) | Must hold a valid Canadian Work Visa
Our client, a global technology organization, is seeking an experienced Senior DevOps Engineer for a permanent, full-time opportunity based onsite in Vancouver.
This is a highly technical, hands-on position with a strong emphasis on Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), Kubernetes, CI/CD, and observability. The successful candidate will play a critical role in ensuring the reliability, scalability, and performance of large-scale production systems that process terabytes of data daily and support hundreds of microservices.
Working within a collaborative engineering environment, the Senior DevOps Engineer will focus on improving system availability, strengthening infrastructure resilience, automating operational processes, and enhancing monitoring and observability capabilities. The role involves managing complex containerized environments, optimizing deployment pipelines, troubleshooting production issues, and implementing modern SRE and DevOps practices.
The successful candidate will collaborate closely with software development, security, and infrastructure teams to improve platform stability and accelerate software delivery. As a senior member of the team, they will also provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, new graduates, and offshore team members.
The ideal candidate brings deep, hands-on Kubernetes expertise, strong experience with CI/CD pipelines, advanced observability capabilities, and proficiency in scripting and infrastructure automation. While experience across cloud platforms and modern DevOps technologies is valuable, the organization is open to candidates with different technical backgrounds who demonstrate strong foundational engineering skills and the ability to solve complex infrastructure challenges.
Responsibilities:
- Design, implement, and maintain highly available, scalable, resilient, and cost-efficient production infrastructure supporting large-scale distributed applications
- Apply Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles and best practices to improve system reliability, availability, performance, and operational efficiency
- Manage, optimize, and troubleshoot Kubernetes environments, including cluster configuration, workload scheduling, resource allocation, scaling, and performance optimization
- Support complex containerized environments running hundreds of microservices, ensuring reliable application performance and service availability
- Develop, maintain, and optimize CI/CD pipelines to streamline software delivery, improve deployment reliability, and reduce manual intervention
- Implement and enhance monitoring, logging, tracing, and observability solutions to improve system visibility and accelerate issue identification and resolution
- Build and maintain observability capabilities using tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, and the ELK Stack
- Investigate and resolve complex production issues involving infrastructure, Kubernetes clusters, networking, application performance, and distributed systems
- Develop and implement automation scripts and operational tooling to improve infrastructure management, deployment processes, and incident response
- Manage cloud infrastructure, application deployments, and production release operations across complex environments
- Implement and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions using technologies such as Terraform, Ansible, and Helm
- Collaborate with software engineering teams to incorporate reliability, performance, security, and operational best practices throughout the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC)
- Drive continuous improvements in system resilience, fault tolerance, capacity management, and operational readiness
- Participate in system architecture reviews, technical design discussions, platform management, and capacity planning
- Identify and address infrastructure bottlenecks, performance limitations, and opportunities for resource optimization
- Evaluate and introduce new tools, technologies, and engineering practices to improve platform reliability and developer productivity
- Support the implementation and ongoing improvement of automated deployment, configuration management, and infrastructure provisioning processes
- Develop and maintain technical documentation covering system architecture, operational procedures, troubleshooting guides, and infrastructure configurations
- Provide technical mentorship, coaching, and guidance to junior engineers, new graduates, and offshore team members
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to establish consistent technical standards and operational practices
- Participate in a scheduled on-call rotation, approximately once per month, supporting production systems within a globally distributed support model
- Contribute to incident investigation, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives to minimize downtime and prevent recurring issues
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of relevant experience in DevOps Engineering, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), Platform Engineering, or a closely related discipline
- Advanced hands-on Kubernetes expertise is essential, including cluster administration, troubleshooting, configuration, scaling, and production workload management
- Demonstrated experience resolving complex Kubernetes issues in large-scale production environments
- Strong practical experience designing, implementing, maintaining, and troubleshooting CI/CD pipelines
- Extensive experience with monitoring, logging, tracing, and observability practices in distributed production environments
- Hands-on experience with observability technologies such as Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, ELK Stack, or comparable tools
- Strong scripting and automation capabilities using Python, Bash, PowerShell, JavaScript, or similar languages
- Solid understanding of Site Reliability Engineering principles, including system availability, resilience, performance optimization, incident response, and operational automation
- Strong experience with Linux system administration, including networking, security, system performance, and troubleshooting
- Experience managing and supporting containerized applications and microservices architectures in production
- Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and configuration management tools such as Terraform, Ansible, Helm, or equivalent technologies
- Experience with modern CI/CD and deployment technologies such as ArgoCD, GitHub Actions, or comparable platforms
- Familiarity with Kubernetes autoscaling technologies, including Karpenter, cluster autoscaling, or similar solutions, is considered an asset
- Experience working with cloud infrastructure and multi-cloud environments is valuable
- Knowledge of Amazon Web Services (AWS) is considered an asset but is not mandatory
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, infrastructure architecture, networking, and cloud-native engineering practices
- Experience troubleshooting complex production issues involving microservices, Kubernetes, infrastructure, and application performance
- Demonstrated ability to identify reliability risks, investigate root causes, and implement sustainable technical solutions
- Strong experience improving deployment automation, infrastructure efficiency, operational processes, and developer workflows
- Ability to provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineers with varying levels of experience
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a practical, hands-on approach to complex technical challenges
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts, architectural decisions, and infrastructure requirements to diverse audiences
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with software developers, security specialists, infrastructure engineers, and senior technical stakeholders
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize competing technical and operational demands in a fast-paced environment
- Willingness and ability to participate in a scheduled on-call rotation supporting production systems
