SUMMARY
The Asset Management Analyst (Intern) plays a major lead role in designing and building BGIS’s building data collection system. The system is designed for collecting environmental, occupancy and equipment-performance information and converting it into practical insight and support analysis. Working with senior product and technical leads, this part-time student role coordinates and performs hands-on hardware, firmware, communications, data, testing, documentation and pilot activities to progress prototypes.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Product Execution & Coordination
- Play a major lead role in maintaining the product development workplan, priorities, issue log, technical decisions, release notes and delivery status.
- Coordinate dependencies with BGIS product, asset management, software, data, security and field delivery resources.
- Maintain clear documentation of architecture, configurations, tests, limitations, decisions and next actions.
Hardware, Firmware & Connectivity
- Design, prototype, assemble, configure and troubleshoot sensor nodes, gateways, enclosures, power systems and components, including PCB design, manufacturing coordination, assembly and bring-up.
- Develop and maintain embedded firmware, device configuration and integrations; calibrate sensors and document calibration methods, reference standards, tolerances and results.
- Improve reliable continuous operation, including thermal performance, power regulation, Bluetooth, cellular and mesh communications.
- Maintain the bill of materials, assess component alternatives, source parts and prepare kits for controlled trials and pilots.
Data, Analytics & Integration
- Maintain the telemetry pipeline from device collection through MQTT, time-series storage, dashboards and approved asset management program integration points.
- Validate data completeness, accuracy, timestamps, uptime, connectivity and recovery following interrupted service.
- Plan controlled experiments, perform statistical analysis, and train and validate machine learning and anomaly-detection models for building conditions.
Testing, Pilot & Productization
- Define and execute bench, soak, connectivity, calibration, sensor comparison, field and regression tests; document results and corrective actions.
- Prepare repeatable assembly, configuration, commissioning, deployment and troubleshooting procedures.
- Support Markham testing and client-site pilot deployment, collect feedback, investigate failures and implement improvements.
- Develop 3D models and 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) outputs from spatial and imaging data, and prepare the reference design, pilot findings and prioritized backlog for the next product generation.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Currently enrolled in Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or a related university program.
- Hands-on experience with electronics, sensors, microcontrollers and physical prototyping, including PCB design and manufacturing, soldering and board bring-up, sensor calibration, 3D modelling and 3D printing; familiarity with ESP32, Arduino or PlatformIO is preferred.
- Working capability in one or more of C/C++, Python, MQTT, REST APIs, Bluetooth, cellular communications, Linux, Docker, InfluxDB or Grafana, with experience training machine learning models, performing statistical analysis, and working with spatial or imaging methods such as 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS).
- Ability to troubleshoot across hardware, firmware, communications and software, manage competing priorities, document work clearly and progress an objective through experimentation to a working result.
- Ability to work primarily remotely, with occasional onsite prototype, assembly, testing and pilot work in Markham, Ontario.
This is a part-time, contract position with a salary range of $19 - $23 per hour. The starting salary will be based on the successful candidate’s competencies, including but not limited to experience, education and performance related to this role.
