Original job description

About BHP

At BHP, we believe our purpose goes beyond mining: we work to improve lives and create a more sustainable future. We are a global resources company with operations in more than 90 locations worldwide.

In Canada, our presence is growing with the development of one of the most significant potash projects in the world: Jansen. This project reflects our long-term commitment to sustainability, community engagement, and economic growth.

Come and be part of this success!

About Potash and the Jansen Project

Imagine being part of something truly world-class, something that's shaping the future of sustainable agriculture and responsible resource development. That's what the Jansen Potash Project offers.

Located about 140 kilometers east of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Jansen is set to become one of the largest and most sustainable potash mines in the world. At approximately US$15.3 billion investment, it marks the biggest private investment in Saskatchewan's history, and a bold step forward for BHP in Canada.

Beyond its scale, Jansen will create lasting value for people and communities. The project is expected to support approximately 5,500 jobs during construction and around 900 permanent roles once production begins.

Whether you're looking to grow your career, make a meaningful impact, or be part of a legacy project, Jansen could be the place where it all begins.

Why BHP?

With operations worldwide, BHP offers limitless opportunities. Whether it's competitive benefits, international career pathways, or the chance to be part of a world-class project like Jansen, at BHP you can shape a career that's truly yours.

We are proud to be recognized as one of Canada's Top 100 Employers for 2026, a testament to our dedication to fostering a positive, diverse and rewarding work environment.

If you're looking for a place where your work has purpose, your growth is supported, and your impact is real, this could be your next step.

The Challenge Ahead

As a GIS Summer Student, you will gain hands-on experience supporting the Potash Resource Engineering and GIS teams as they prepare for the transition from project development to operations at Jansen. You will work alongside experienced GIS and technical professionals, helping manage geospatial data, create maps and visualizations, support GIS applications, and contribute to projects that improve how spatial information is used across the business.

This four-month opportunity will provide exposure to enterprise GIS, data management, operational readiness, and continuous improvement initiatives while building practical skills in a dynamic mining environment. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, build valuable industry experience, and explore potential career pathways within BHP.

Whether your interests lie in project development, technical services, operations support, maintenance, or environmental management, you'll have the opportunity to apply your academic learning in a real-world environment while developing skills that will support your future career.

Please note: This opportunity is being advertised in anticipation of our 2027 Engineer Summer Students Program intake. Successful candidates will commence their graduate roles in May 2027. We encourage interested students to apply and be considered as part of our upcoming recruitment process.

Key Responsibilities

Support the GIS team in maintaining and improving geospatial datasets, applications, and workflows.
Assist with spatial data collection, validation, analysis, and quality assurance activities.
Create maps, dashboards, visualizations, and reports to support operational and project decisions.
Assist with GIS data management, documentation, and records organization.
Support process improvement and automation initiatives that enhance GIS efficiency and data quality.
Collaborate with engineers, surveyors, project teams, and other stakeholders to support business requirements.
Participate in safety, environmental, and operational excellence activities consistent with BHP values.

What You'll Bring to the Role

To be considered, you will be currently enrolled in a Certificate, Diploma, or Degree program in one of the following disciplines:

Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Geomatics
Surveying Technology
Mining Engineering Technology
Geographic Information Science
A related geospatial discipline

You will also bring:

An interest in geospatial technology, mapping, and spatial data management.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Working knowledge in Microsoft Office applications
The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to data quality.
A willingness to learn and contribute in a dynamic environment.
Experience with geospatial technologies, data management tools, and industries such as mining, surveying, construction, or industrial operations would be considered an asset, particularly where applied to data analysis, automation, process improvement, and operational decision-making.

Work Location

Downtown, Saskatoon office. 40 hours per week. Hybrid working (flexible, shared workstations and a combination of office and work from home) is standard for BHP.

This is a four-month summer student opportunity beginning in May 2027 and ending in August 2027. Students will gain exposure to project, construction, and operational readiness activities while working alongside experienced professionals in a collaborative and safety-focused environment.

Application Deadline

This posting will be active until 11:59pm CST on October 27, 2026
