Original job description

About BHP

At BHP, we believe our purpose goes beyond mining: we work to improve lives and create a more sustainable future. We are a global resources company with operations in more than 90 locations worldwide.

In Canada, our presence is growing with the development of one of the most significant potash projects in the world; Jansen. This project reflects our long-term commitment to sustainability, community engagement, and economic growth.

About Potash and the Jansen Project

Imagine being part of something truly world-class, something that’s shaping the future of sustainable agriculture and responsible resource development. That’s what the Jansen Potash Project offers.

Located about 140 kilometers east of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Jansen is set to become one of the largest and most sustainable potash mines on the planet. With a CAD$14 billion (US$10.5 billion) investment, it marks the biggest private investment in Saskatchewan’s history, and a bold step forward for BHP in Canada.

But Jansen is more than a mine; it's a long-term opportunity to build something meaningful. During construction, it will create around 5,500 jobs, and once in operation, 900 permanent roles. Whether you're looking to grow your career, contribute to a sustainable future, or be part of a legacy project, Jansen could be the place where it all begins.

Why BHP?

At BHP, we are transforming the way mining is done. We embrace innovation, sustainability, and inclusion to build a smarter, safer, and more human future.

We are proud to be recognized as one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers for 2026, a testament to our dedication to fostering a positive, diverse, and rewarding work environment. At BHP, you’ll be part of a team that values safety, integrity, performance, and collaboration.

The Challenge Ahead

As a Laboratory Technician, you will play a key role in supporting safe, reliable, and efficient potash production through high-quality analytical testing and laboratory operations. Your work will help ensure accurate process data, product quality, and operational performance across one of the world's most significant potash projects.

Working closely with operations, maintenance, and technical teams, you will contribute to the successful commissioning, ramp-up, and ongoing optimization of the mill while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and laboratory excellence.

Please note: We are advertising this position in anticipation of future requirements and may not have an immediate opening in this area. At BHP, things move quickly, and new opportunities are always emerging. We’re building a pool of talented individuals who are interested in being considered when the right role becomes available. If you're keen to join us, we’d love to hear from you. We’ll match your skills and experience to upcoming opportunities as they arise.

Key Responsibilities

Perform routine and non-routine chemical, physical, and mineralogical analyses of underground, process, product, and environmental samples.
Prepare samples using established laboratory procedures and analytical methods.
Operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory instruments and analytical equipment.
Deliver accurate and timely analytical results to support operational decision-making and process performance.
Support laboratory quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) programs, including proficiency testing and control sample monitoring.
Manage sample tracking, chain-of-custody requirements, and laboratory data management activities.
Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and process engineering teams to investigate process performance and product quality outcomes.
Participate in laboratory method development, validation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Maintain compliance with laboratory procedures, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
Support commissioning activities and ongoing optimization of mill and laboratory systems.

What You'll Bring to the Role

Diploma or Degree in Chemical Technology, Laboratory Technology, Chemistry, Analytical Sciences, or a related discipline.
Minimum 3 years of laboratory experience in mining, mineral processing, industrial, or environmental laboratory environments.
Hands-on experience operating and maintaining analytical instrumentation such as XRF, Flame Photometers, Auto-Titrators, UV-Vis, Moisture Analyzers, or similar laboratory equipment.
Strong understanding of laboratory quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC), sample preparation techniques, and analytical testing methodologies.
Demonstrated troubleshooting, problem-solving, and organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
Commitment to safety, quality, teamwork, and continuous improvement in an operational environment.

Preferred Experience

Experience working with a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
Knowledge of potash processing, mineral analysis, or industrial laboratory operations.
Valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver's Licence or equivalent.

Work Location

This position is based at our Jansen Mine Site in Leroy, SK. You will be required to work 7 days on followed by 7 days off at the Jansen Mine Site. Your working day consists of a 12-hour shift (days or nights). For those not living locally, BHP provides relocation assistance to the local Jansen area. Alternatively, you can enjoy the convenience and comfort of our onsite camp accommodation at Discovery Lodge during your shifts.

BHP offers domestic relocation assistance to support the successful incumbent in transitioning, if required. Benefits offered as part of the relocation program include (but are not limited to) new home purchase assistance, temporary accommodations, home finding trip and a resettlement allowance.
