Original job description

About BHP

At BHP, we believe our purpose goes beyond mining: we work to improve lives and create a more sustainable future. We are a global resources company with operations in more than 90 locations worldwide.

In Canada, our presence is growing with the development of one of the most significant potash projects in the world: Jansen. This project reflects our long-term commitment to sustainability, community engagement, and economic growth.

Come and be part of this success!

About Potash and the Jansen Project

Imagine being part of something truly world-class, something that is shaping the future of sustainable agriculture and responsible resource development. That's what the Jansen Potash Project offers.

Located about 140 kilometers east of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Jansen is set to become one of the largest and most sustainable potash mines in the world. At approximately US$15.3 billion investment, it marks the biggest private investment in Saskatchewan's history, and a bold step forward for BHP in Canada.

Beyond its scale, Jansen will create lasting value for people and communities. The project is expected to support approximately 5,500 jobs during construction and around 900 permanent roles once production begins.

Whether you're looking to grow your career, make a meaningful impact, or be part of a legacy project, Jansen could be the place where it all begins.

The Challenge Ahead

We are seeking an experienced Principal Portfolio to play a critical role in strengthening project and portfolio governance across one of the most significant resource developments in Canada.

In this role, you will provide expert leadership in governance, assurance, risk management, and project performance oversight to help deliver safe, sustainable, and value-driven outcomes. Working across complex project environments, you will partner with leaders and stakeholders to implement effective governance frameworks, assurance processes, and management of change practices that support successful project execution from concept through delivery.

As a trusted advisor, you will engage with senior leaders, facilitate workshops, provide governance insights, and help embed consistent ways of working that support project excellence across the portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of governance and assurance frameworks across projects and portfolios.
Monitor project and portfolio performance to support delivery against safety, schedule, scope, cost, and value objectives.
Provide expert advice and guidance on risk identification, mitigation strategies, compliance requirements, and governance standards throughout the project lifecycle.
Conduct portfolio benchmarking and assess project performance to identify risks, trends, opportunities, and investment priorities.
Facilitate informed decision-making by evaluating options, assessing impacts, and supporting robust governance processes.
Lead the end-to-end project intake process, managing new project requests from initial submission through opportunity assessment, and coordinating the seamless handover of approved initiatives to the assigned Project Manager for delivery.
Partner with stakeholders across functions to align priorities, improve ways of working, and enhance value chain performance.
Prepare and deliver presentations, governance reviews, and workshops that communicate complex information clearly and drive stakeholder engagement.
Support a culture of continuous improvement, operational excellence, customer focus, and disciplined execution.

What You’ll Bring to the Role

You are a collaborative and commercially minded governance professional who brings a strong understanding of project delivery, assurance frameworks, and portfolio management within large-scale capital projects or complex operational environments.

You will also bring:

Demonstrated experience establishing, implementing, and improving governance and assurance practices across major projects, programs, or portfolios.
Strong knowledge of project controls, project performance management, risk management, and governance frameworks.
Experience supporting complex project decision-making and evaluating the impacts of project outcomes across multiple stakeholders and business functions.
Well-developed portfolio management capability, including benchmarking, investment prioritisation, and performance analysis.
Strong business acumen with the ability to connect governance decisions to operational, strategic, and commercial outcomes.
Advanced stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with the ability to build credibility and work effectively with senior leaders and cross-functional teams.
Excellent communication, presentation, facilitation, and workshop leadership capabilities.
A commitment to safety, inclusion, continuous improvement, and delivering value for customers and the business.
Experience within technology, mining, resources, or other large-scale project environments will be highly regarded.

Work Location

Downtown, Saskatoon office. 40 hours per week. Hybrid working (flexible, shared workstations and a combination of office and work from home) is standard for BHP.

Why BHP?

With operations worldwide, BHP offers limitless opportunities. Whether it's competitive benefits, international career pathways, or the chance to be part of a world-class project like Jansen, at BHP you can shape a career that's truly yours.

We are proud to be recognized as one of Canada's Top 100 Employers for 2026, a testament of our dedication to fostering a positive, diverse and rewarding work environment.

If you're looking for a place where your work has purpose, your growth is supported, and your impact is real, this could be your next step.

Application Deadline

This posting will be active until 11:59pm CST on November 17, 2026

Why You’ll Love Working Here

At BHP, we understand that to bring your best, you need to feel your best. That's why our benefits are designed to support your health, your growth, and your personal balance.

Professional Development: Continuous learning and real opportunities for growth.
Compensation: Fair and competitive, reflecting your role, skills, and achievements.
Inclusive Culture: We foster a workplace where everyone feels valued, respected, and free to express their authentic identity.

And so much more!

About Our Process

At BHP, we are committed to employing individuals who align with the BHP Charter Values and meet the requirements of the role. As part of the recruitment process, there are several checks which may be conducted to demonstrate applicants' suitability for a role including police/criminal background checks, medical, drug and alcohol testing, due diligence checks, right to work checks, and/or reference checks.

We Support a Diverse Workforce

At BHP, we believe diversity makes us stronger. We're committed to creating a safe, inclusive workplace where everyone is treated fairly and can thrive. Our workforce reflects the communities where we operate, and we value all aspects of identity, including gender, age, race, disability, sexual orientation, religion, neurodiversity, education, and more.

We ensure that our recruitment process is fair, accessible, and equitable. If you have a disability and need adjustments, please contact us at inclusion@bhp.com.

At BHP, we aim to unlock the enormous potential that diverse and inclusive teams bring to the workplace, to leave a strong legacy within and beyond our operations for generations to come.

Based on existing demographics in our Potash project, preference in hiring will be given to qualified women and Indigenous peoples who self-identify as such in the application process. This reasonable and justifiable measure has been implemented pursuant to section 56 of The Saskatchewan Human Rights Code, 2018.
