The Challenge Ahead
The Legacy Assets Canada Projects team is responsible for the safe and effective delivery of capital projects across BHP’s legacy sites in Canada. As Principal Projects, you will play a key leadership role in planning and delivering projects from concept through to construction and handover, ensuring strong outcomes across safety, scope, schedule, quality, budget and stakeholder engagement.
This is an opportunity to lead meaningful projects that contribute to environmental stewardship, mine closure, reclamation and asset management across multiple Canadian locations. You will partner with contractors, consultants, regulators, community stakeholders and internal teams to deliver projects that create long-term value while maintaining the highest safety standards.
Working in a dynamic environment, you will bring practical project delivery expertise, strong field execution capability and a collaborative leadership style that supports continuous improvement and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the planning and execution of capital projects across BHP’s Legacy Assets sites in Canada.
- Manage contractor onboarding, mobilization, field supervision and contract performance to support safe and efficient project delivery.
- Oversee project scope, schedule, budget, risk and overall performance throughout the project lifecycle.
- Provide visible field leadership to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with approved plans, permits, specifications and BHP standards.
- Coordinate and influence a broad range of stakeholders including contractors, consultants, regulators, community representatives and internal functions.
- Support risk identification, assessment and mitigation while promoting informed decision-making and continuous improvement.
- Lead procurement activities including scope development, tendering, bid evaluation and contractor selection.
- Review engineering drawings, specifications and construction plans to enhance constructability, execution efficiency and risk management.
- Provide project reporting, performance updates and leadership throughout project execution.
- Foster a culture built on safety, accountability, collaboration and continuous improvement.
What You'll Bring to the Role
You are an experienced project professional with a demonstrated ability to lead complex capital projects and manage multiple stakeholders in industrial, construction, environmental or mining-related environments.
Your background may include:
- Demonstarted experience in project delivery, construction management, mine closure or reclamation, civil earthworks, water management, industrial construction or related sectors.
- Proven success managing contractors and coordinating field-based project execution activities.
- Well-developed capability in managing project scope, schedule, budget and risk.
- Experience working within regulated environments and collaborating with regulators, consultants, contractors and external stakeholders.
- Strong knowledge of construction safety management systems and field execution practices.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement and problem-solving skills.
The following qualifications would be beneficial:
- Experience with water management infrastructure, tailings storage facilities, civil works, industrial facilities, environmental remediation or reclamation projects.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and independently managing complex projects.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), Certified Engineering Technologist (CET), Project Management Professional (PMP), trade certification or a similar professional designation.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and French.
Salary Range
$151,200 - $189,000
The starting salary will be determined based on relevant experience, education, internal equity, and market considerations.
Work Location
This permanent, full-time role is based in Elliot Lake, Ontario, Canada and primarily supports project planning and execution activities at the Elliot Lake site.
The position also supports BHP Legacy Assets projects across Canada, including locations in British Columbia, Quebec and Nova Scotia. Travel to these sites may be required depending on project portfolio needs and business priorities.
