Original job description

About BHP

At BHP, we believe our purpose goes beyond mining: we work to improve lives and create a more sustainable future. We are a global resources company with operations in more than 90 locations worldwide.

In Canada, our presence is growing with the development of one of the most significant potash projects in the world: Jansen. This project reflects our long-term commitment to sustainability, community engagement, and economic growth.

Come and be part of this success!

About Potash and the Jansen Project

Imagine being part of something truly world-class, something that´s shaping the future of sustainable agriculture and responsible resource development. That´s what the Jansen Potash Project offers.

Located about 140 kilometers east of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Jansen is set to become one of the largest and most sustainable potash mines in the world. At approximately US$15.3 billion investment, it marks the biggest private investment in Saskatchewan’s history, and a bold step forward for BHP in Canada.

Beyond its scale, Jansen will create lasting value for people and communities. The project is expected to support approximately 5,500 jobs during construction and around 900 permanent roles once production begins.

Whether you're looking to grow your career, make a meaningful impact, or be part of a legacy project, Jansen could be the place where it all begins.

The Challenge Ahead

As Superintendent HSS Systems, you will provide leadership across Health, Safety, Security, Hygiene, Emergency Response, and related HSS functions, ensuring programs, systems, and teams are aligned to support safe, sustainable, and high-performing operations.

This is a senior leadership role with accountability for developing and coaching multidisciplinary teams while driving the continuous improvement of health, safety, and environmental performance. Working closely with operational leaders and key stakeholders, you will influence strategic decision-making, strengthen risk management practices, and help shape a culture where safety, wellbeing, environmental stewardship, and operational excellence are embedded in everything we do.

You will lead initiatives that improve organizational capability, enhance compliance, and support the long-term success of BHP's Potash business and the Jansen Project.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and develop the HSS systems teams, fostering a culture of inclusion, accountability, continuous improvement, and high performance.
Provide strategic leadership across HSS systems, governance and assurance, risk management, and operational readiness
Drive the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of HSS management systems, standards, controls, governance processes and practices that support safe and sustainable operations.
Partner with operational and functional leaders to identify risks, evaluate opportunities, and implement effective risk management strategies.
Oversee the analysis of performance indicators, emerging trends, and operational risks to support informed decision-making and continuous improvement.
Provide specialist expertise and coaching to leaders on HSS management practices, governance, assurance, change requirements and improvement opportunities.
Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to achieve consistent application of HSS requirements to BHP standards across the asset including shared objectives and drive positive business outcomes.
Lead problem-solving and improvement initiatives that address complex challenges and deliver sustainable value.
Support organizational readiness by ensuring HSS programs align with regulatory requirements, business priorities, and long-term operational goals.

What You'll Bring to the Role

You are an experienced leader with a strong background in health, safety, security, environment, emergency response, occupational health, or related operational disciplines within a complex industrial environment.

You will also bring:

Demonstrated success leading multidisciplinary teams and building high-performing cultures through coaching, mentoring, and capability development.
Strong knowledge of health, safety, environmental, and risk management principles, systems, and best practices.
Experience developing and implementing strategic programs, standards, and improvement initiatives that deliver measurable business outcomes.
Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills, with the ability to interpret complex information and make informed decisions.
Experience influencing stakeholders, negotiating outcomes, and building trusted relationships across all levels of an organization.
Proven ability to manage risk, solve complex problems, and lead change in dynamic operational environments.
Strong business acumen and an understanding of how health, safety, environmental, and operational priorities contribute to sustainable business performance.
A visible commitment to safety, inclusion, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Work Location

Downtown, Saskatoon office. 40 hours per week. Hybrid working (flexible, shared workstations and a combination of office and work from home) is standard for BHP.

Why BHP?

With operations worldwide, BHP offers limitless opportunities. Whether it’s competitive benefits, international career pathways, or the chance to be part of a world-class project like Jansen, at BHP you can shape a career that’s truly yours.

We are proud to be recognized as one of Canada´s Top 100 Employers for 2026, a testament of our dedication to fostering a positive, diverse and rewarding work environment.

If you're looking for a place where your work has purpose, your growth is supported, and your impact is real, this could be your next step.

Why You'll Love Working Here

At BHP, we understand that to bring your best, you need to feel your best. That’s why our benefits are designed to support your health, your growth, and your personal balance.

Professional Development: Continuous learning and real opportunities for growth.
Compensation: Fair and competitive, reflecting your role, skills, and achievements.

And so much more!

About Our Process

At BHP, we are committed to employing individuals who align with the BHP Charter Values and meet the requirements of the role. As part of the recruitment process, there are several checks which may be conducted to demonstrate applicants’ suitability for a role including police / criminal background checks, medical, drug and alcohol testing, due diligence checks, right to work checks, and/or reference checks.

We Support a Diverse Workforce

At BHP, we believe diversity makes us stronger. We’re committed to creating a safe, inclusive workplace where everyone is treated fairly and can thrive. Our workforce reflects the communities where we operate, and we value all aspects of identity; gender, age, race, disability, sexual orientation, religion, neurodiversity, education, and more.

We ensure that our recruitment process is fair, accessible, and equitable. If you have a disability and need adjustments, please contact us at inclusion@bhp.com.

At BHP, we aim to unlock the enormous potential that diverse and inclusive teams bring to the workplace, to leave a strong legacy within and beyond our operations for the generations to come.
