Original job description

Survey Lead – East Harbour Transit Hub ProjectReporting to the Project Director, the Survey Lead will work directly with the execution team to ensure that work completed by Bird Construction’s Infrastructure-Major Projects group meets all company and client specifications.

You would be joining the East Harbour Transit Hub Alliance that is designing and building a new railway station that will connect 3 different rail lines and improve the daily commute of thousands of riders. This position is based at the site office, 415 Eastern Ave, Toronto.

What You Will Be Working On

  • Lead all survey operations on a large, multidisciplinary transit infrastructure project, overseeing the internal survey management team to ensure timely, accurate, and compliant survey deliverables aligned with construction, design, and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage coordination of all land access and property related requirements across the site, including identification of access constraints and integration with construction phasing, logistics planning, and design evolution.
  • Maintain a dynamic Lands Tracker system to support real-time identification and coordination of land needs across disciplines, enabling clear collaboration between the alliance and the client and enhancing project wide transparency.
  • Direct the in-house survey management team responsible for overseeing subcontracted surveyors - ensuring technical review of deliverables, validation of daily reports and timesheets, and overall performance tracking within budget and schedule constraints.
  • Enforce project-specific survey procedures, quality standards, and data control practices, ensuring uniform execution across all field and office-based survey work.
  • Provide strategic input on survey methodology, sequencing, and logistics planning, supporting project needs from early works through final turnover.
  • Oversee QA/QC reviews of survey data, drawings, and models - validating compliance with design specifications, tolerances, and statutory requirements.
  • Identify and mitigate survey-related risks or conflicts early by collaborating with design, construction, and engineering teams to align field realities with project intent.
  • Support a coordinated project delivery model by driving collaboration across technical disciplines, contributing to integrated planning and execution within a fast-paced alliance environment.

What We Are Looking For

·

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Geomatics Engineering, Surveying Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or a closely related discipline.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in construction surveying, including at least 3 years in a survey leadership or management role, preferably with a general contractor or surveying subcontractor.
  • Demonstrated experience managing survey operations on large-scale infrastructure projects, preferably involving rail, transit, bridges, or other complex civil construction.
  • Strong technical understanding of construction surveying principles, survey control networks, coordinate systems, construction tolerances, and survey data management.
  • Experience overseeing survey subcontractors, reviewing technical deliverables, managing survey resources, and ensuring compliance with project specifications, quality standards, and schedules.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, construction specifications, survey plans, and other contractual and technical documents, and effectively coordinate with design, engineering, and construction teams.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem solving skills, with the ability to identify survey related risks, resolve technical issues, and manage competing project priorities.
  • Familiarity with industry standard survey equipment, AutoCAD/Civil 3D, and digital survey workflows. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and project management systems is also desirable.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to mentor and support survey personnel, manage subcontractor performance, and promote collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ontario Land Surveyor (OLS) designation is considered a strong asset, particularly for candidates with experience in property matters, land access coordination, and legal survey requirements.
  • Experience working on Metrolinx, railway, or other major transit infrastructure projects is considered an asset.
