Original job description
Department: Art & Sound
Position: 2D Spine Animator
Employment Type: Full-time
Job OverviewWe are looking for an experienced 2D Spine Animator to join our slot game development team. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in creating engaging animations and visual effects for slot games, with the ability to translate static artwork into polished, high-quality game animations.
This role requires both creativity and technical understanding. You will work closely with Game Artists, Developers, and the Art Team Lead to ensure animations are visually appealing, technically optimized, and ready for game implementation.
We are looking for someone who can contribute creative ideas, understand the technical requirements of game development, and recommend the most efficient animation approaches.
Key Responsibilities1. Slot Game Animation
- Create high-quality 2D animations using Spine for slot game characters, symbols, backgrounds, UI elements, and game features.
- Develop animations for winning combinations, symbol transformations, multipliers, free spins, bonus rounds, jackpots, and other game mechanics.
- Create engaging visual effects, including anticipation, impact, transitions, reveals, explosions, and other gameplay effects.
- Ensure animations are smooth, polished, and consistent with the game's art direction.
- Interpret animation references and translate them into production-ready assets.
2. Technical Optimization
- Determine the most appropriate animation approach depending on the requirements, whether using Spine, code-based animation, particle effects, or PNG sequences.
- Optimize skeletons, meshes, draw calls, texture atlases, and exported assets.
- Maintain manageable project structures and file sizes without compromising visual quality.
- Work with developers to ensure animations are properly implemented and perform efficiently in-game.
- Understand technical limitations and propose alternative solutions when necessary.
3. Collaboration & Production Workflow
- Coordinate with Game Artists and Developers before starting animation production to clarify requirements and technical limitations.
- Work closely with the development team to minimize unnecessary revisions and back-and-forth.
- Provide animation references, previews, and technical recommendations during the planning stage.
- Communicate progress, identify potential production issues, and suggest solutions.
- Maintain organized Spine project files and deliver assets according to project specifications.
4. Research & Innovation
- Explore AI animation tools and other technologies to generate animation references and improve production workflows.
- Use AI-generated animations as references for timing, movement, effects, and animation concepts.
- Stay updated with animation techniques and tools that can improve the quality and efficiency of slot game development.
- Strong experience with Spine 2D, particularly in game development.
- Proven experience creating animations for slot games, casino games, or mobile games.
- Strong understanding of animation principles, timing, spacing, anticipation, follow-through, and secondary motion.
- Experience creating complex visual effects and gameplay animations.
- Knowledge of skeletal animation, mesh deformation, constraints, and animation blending.
- Understanding of game asset optimization and runtime performance.
- Ability to work with developers and understand technical animation requirements.
- Proactive problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.
- Good communication skills and ability to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team.
- Experience developing complete slot game animation sequences.
- Knowledge of particle systems and code-based animation.
- Experience with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
- Familiarity with AI animation tools and workflows.
- Ability to independently handle animation tasks from planning to final implementation.
- Strong creative input and the ability to suggest improvements to animation concepts.
- Good judgment in choosing between Spine, code-based animation, and PNG sequences.
- Ability to balance animation quality, production time, and technical performance.
- Organized working files and efficient asset delivery.
- Proactive communication and coordination with artists and developers.
