Finance Business Partner (Part-Time)

About the opportunity

BLOK Group is looking for an analytical, curious, and technology-minded Finance Business Partner to work directly with the owner across our construction and fitness businesses. This is a hands-on opportunity to understand how different businesses operate, explore what drives their financial performance, and turn data into better business decisions.

This part-time role is well suited to a BCom or MBA student, a recent graduate, or an early-career professional with a strong business foundation. We value sound thinking, initiative, and a willingness to learn more than a long list of previous job titles.

The role

You will help connect financial results with what is happening in day-to-day operations. Your work will go beyond preparing spreadsheets: you will investigate performance, build useful dashboards, explain what the numbers mean, and recommend practical actions.

The focus is financial analysis and business decision support, rather than primarily bookkeeping or transaction processing. You do not need to arrive as an expert in construction or fitness, but you should be genuinely interested in learning both.

What you will do

· Financial analysis: Analyze revenue, expenses, margins, and cash flow across businesses, projects, and locations. Identify trends, explain variances, and flag risks and opportunities.

· Dashboards and reporting: Build and maintain clear dashboards that bring financial and operational information together into a useful view of business performance.

· Construction performance: Examine project budgets, actual and committed costs, forecast costs to complete, billing, and cash requirements to help assess project profitability.

· Fitness performance: Analyze membership revenue, sales conversion, retention, staffing costs, studio profitability, and break-even performance.

· Planning and forecasting: Support budgets, cash-flow forecasts, scenario models, and business cases for operational improvements and growth opportunities.

· Data quality and systems: Organize information from accounting and operating systems, check its accuracy, and improve repeatable reporting processes.

· Decision support: Work directly with the owner to investigate business questions and present concise findings, recommendations, and follow-up actions.

· Technology and automation: Explore appropriate uses of AI, reporting tools, and automation to reduce manual work while protecting confidential information and validating outputs.

What you bring

· Business foundation: Studies in commerce, finance, accounting, business analytics, an MBA, or a related discipline, whether in progress or completed.

· Financial understanding: A solid grasp of financial statements, profitability, budgeting, and cash flow.

· Spreadsheet skills: Confidence using Excel or Google Sheets to organize data, build models, and communicate findings.

· Analytical curiosity: A habit of asking why results changed, checking assumptions, and looking beyond the headline numbers.

· Technology interest: A willingness to learn new software, dashboard tools, and responsible uses of AI.

· Clear communication: The ability to explain financial information in practical, straightforward language.

· Ownership and discretion: Strong attention to detail, reliable follow-through, and good judgment when handling sensitive business information.

· In-office availability: The ability to work 20–25 hours per week from our Ottawa office.

Experience with Power BI, Tableau, Looker Studio, QuickBooks, SQL, or similar tools is an asset, not a requirement. Relevant coursework, academic projects, internships, and independently built dashboards are welcome examples of your abilities.
