Role Mandate
The Group Product Manager, Home Financing provides senior product and people leadership for an assigned portfolio of Canadian Home Financing products and capabilities, with primary accountability for defining product strategy, developing and maintaining multi-year roadmaps, and managing products across their full lifecycle.
The role is accountable for balancing customer outcomes, portfolio growth, profitability, pricing, risk-adjusted performance and operational sustainability. It uses market, customer, financial, operational and risk insights to identify opportunities, recommend priorities, develop business cases and translate strategy into executable initiatives.
The Group Product Manager operates as a senior Home Financing product subject-matter expert and trusted advisor. The role leads through a complex matrix, mobilizing partners across Technology, Credit Risk, Operations, Collections, Finance, Treasury, Legal, Compliance, Marketing, Analytics and frontline channels. The role also provides direct people leadership, building team capability through clear accountability, coaching, delegation and development.
Key Accountabilities
Product strategy and portfolio leadership
- Define and maintain the vision, strategy and multi-year roadmap for the assigned Home Financing product portfolio, aligned with Canadian P&BB priorities, customer needs, market conditions and BMO’s risk appetite.
- Identify emerging trends, customer needs, competitive developments, regulatory changes and product gaps; translate insights into strategic recommendations and prioritized action plans.
- Recommend business priorities, sequencing and resource requirements to senior leaders and provide clear strategic direction to delivery teams and partners.
- Act as the senior product subject-matter expert for the assigned portfolio, communicating complex product, financial, technology and risk considerations in clear business terms.
End-to-end product lifecycle management
- Own the end-to-end lifecycle of the assigned products and capabilities, including strategy, design, value proposition, pricing, implementation, servicing, enhancement, sustainment and retirement.
- Ensure product requirements, documentation, templates, customer and employee materials, policies and procedures accurately reflect approved product and system functionality.
- Assess product and process issues, establish root causes and lead sustainable solutions that improve customer outcomes, operational effectiveness and control performance.
- Maintain an integrated view of product, process, technology, data and channel interdependencies and ensure changes are appropriately sequenced and governed.
Portfolio economics, pricing and performance
- Establish and monitor financial, customer, growth, utilization, retention, operational and risk indicators for the portfolio.
- Develop a deep understanding of portfolio economics and performance drivers, including balances, originations, revenue, margin, expenses, capital considerations, customer behaviour and channel performance.
- Lead or support pricing and value-proposition strategies, including analysis of customer impact, competitiveness, financial outcomes, operational feasibility and risk implications.
- Partner with Finance, Treasury, Analytics, Risk and channel stakeholders on forecasting, performance reporting and recommended corrective actions.
- Prepare clear executive-level insights, recommendations and decisions required to improve portfolio growth, profitability and risk-adjusted performance.
Customer, frontline and channel experience
- Champion the end-to-end customer and frontline experience across acquisition, fulfilment, servicing, renewal, refinance, re-advance and other relevant lifecycle events.
- Use customer research, behavioural data, frontline feedback, complaints, operational insights and journey analysis to identify friction points and prioritize improvements.
- Partner with Marketing, Analytics, Digital, Operations and distribution channels to develop effective value propositions, offers, campaigns, education, training and adoption plans.
- Ensure frontline teams have clear product guidance, job aids, documentation, escalation paths and change-management support.
- Promote simple, transparent and consistent experiences across assisted and digital channels.
Business cases, investment and roadmap prioritization
- Identify product and capability opportunities and develop business cases that articulate customer, financial, strategic, operational, technology and risk outcomes.
- Evaluate solution options, delivery dependencies, expected benefits, implementation costs and return on investment.
- Recommend investment priorities and roadmap trade-offs; support project and budget approval processes and maintain visibility of expected outcomes and benefits.
- Govern material roadmap changes through the appropriate approval and escalation forums.
- Ensure initiatives remain aligned to approved scope, intended benefits and product strategy throughout delivery and sustainment.
Cross-functional execution and change leadership
- Lead complex, cross-functional initiatives from opportunity definition and business requirements through implementation, readiness, adoption, benefits realization and sustainment.
- Establish clear outcomes, decision requirements, accountabilities, dependencies, risks and escalation paths.
- Build alignment among Technology, Credit Risk, Operations, Collections, Finance, Treasury, Legal, Compliance, Marketing, Analytics and frontline-channel partners.
- Monitor delivery progress, resolve obstacles and escalate material scope, funding, risk, customer or timing decisions to the appropriate governance body.
- Lead change-management activities, including stakeholder engagement, readiness, communications, training, implementation and post-launch monitoring.
Risk, regulatory, audit and control governance
- Manage product risks in accordance with BMO’s Risk Management Framework, Risk Culture and approved Risk Appetite.
- Maintain an effective understanding of legal, regulatory, compliance, credit, operational, conduct, technology, data and third-party risks affecting the portfolio.
- Partner with Risk, Compliance, Legal, Corporate Audit and operational control partners to identify control gaps, develop sustainable remediation and demonstrate ongoing effectiveness.
- Lead or support product reviews, attestations, regulatory reporting, audit responses, control testing and maintenance of product policies, directives and procedures.
- Ensure product and pricing decisions are risk-informed, appropriately documented and approved through established authorities.
- Surface emerging risks promptly and drive timely escalation and remediation.
External partners and complex escalations
- Develop and maintain effective relationships with relevant external partners, vendors and industry contacts.
- Establish expectations, monitor performance and support negotiations or issue resolution while balancing customer outcomes, cost, risk and service quality.
- Provide senior product leadership for complex customer, frontline, product, policy or operational escalations.
- Assess exceptions and escalations within delegated authority and ensure matters outside that authority are advanced to the correct decision maker.
People Leadership
- Lead, coach and develop product-management colleagues, establishing clear mandates, priorities, expected outcomes and accountability.
- Build a collaborative, inclusive and high-performing team connected to BMO’s purpose, values and Home Financing strategy.
- Attract, retain and develop talent; provide regular feedback, recognize strong contribution and address performance or capability gaps.
- Delegate meaningful accountability and provide appropriate challenge, guidance and decision support.
- Develop product-management capability, subject-matter depth, succession readiness and cross-training to reduce key-person dependency.
- Promote collaboration across functional and operating groups and create an environment in which colleagues can constructively challenge, learn and deliver together.
Qualifications and Experience
- Typically 9+ years of relevant experience in banking product management, home financing, secured lending, consumer credit, financial-services strategy or a closely related field.
- Post-secondary degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Commerce or a related field of study, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Senior-level experience developing product strategies, multi-year roadmaps and business cases and managing products across their full lifecycle.
- Strong knowledge of Canadian retail banking and home financing, including secured-lending products, pricing, customer and channel considerations, product economics, delivery infrastructure and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Demonstrated experience with portfolio performance, financial analysis, forecasting, market research, competitive analysis and data-driven decision-making.
- Strong experience managing risk associated with new and existing products, including product policies, controls, regulatory or audit requirements and sustainable remediation.
- Demonstrated success leading complex, cross-functional initiatives in a large, matrixed organization.
- People-management experience, including coaching, delegation, talent development and building team capability.
- Experience managing senior stakeholders and developing effective external-partner or vendor relationships.
- Experience translating complex product, financial, risk, customer and technology considerations into clear executive recommendations.

Salary:
$85,500.00 - $185,000.00

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
