Reports to: Director of Engineering
Department: Engineering
Role SummaryThe Mechanical Designer is responsible for producing detailed mechanical designs, drawings, and documentation that support the development and production of Bold Robotic Solutions’ robotic systems. This role primarily focuses on design execution and documentation, while also contributing to early-stage concept design by supporting layouts, system envelopes, and feasibility visuals.
This position translates engineering direction and conceptual intent into clear, accurate, and manufacturable designs that can be efficiently built, assembled, and serviced.
Job ResponsibilitiesMechanical Design & Documentation
- Develop detailed 3D models, assemblies, and part drawings based on engineering direction.
- Produce complete manufacturing-ready drawings, including tolerances, materials, and finishes.
- Create and maintain accurate BOMs aligned with design intent and production needs.
- Update designs and documentation to reflect revisions, improvements, and approved change requests.
- Ensure drawings are clear, complete, and usable by production and assembly teams.
Design for Manufacturing & Assembly
- Apply design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and design-for-assembly (DFA) principles.
- Collaborate with production and operations to resolve manufacturability or assembly issues.
- Support standardization of parts, assemblies, and design approaches.
- Incorporate feedback from the shop floor and service teams into design updates.
- Communicate with suppliers regarding design optimization and quality of components.
- Oversee development of prototyping and in-house components.
Concept Design Support
● Support early-stage concept development through layout models, envelopes, and preliminary assemblies.
● Generate visual concepts used for feasibility discussions and proposals.
● Translate high-level concepts into rough CAD models suitable for internal review.
● Identify obvious mechanical constraints, risks, or opportunities during concept development.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with mechanical engineers, controls engineers, and operations staff.
- Support conceptual designs by developing layouts, envelopes, and preliminary models when required.
- Participate in design reviews and incorporate feedback from engineering leadership.
- Assist with troubleshooting design-related issues during production and testing.
SR&ED Documentation & Technical Record-Keeping
- Maintain clear records of design work related to new development or technical problem-solving.
- Keep organized notes on design changes, testing, iterations, and outcomes.
- Track time spent on development activities as required.
- Maintain organized files of drawings, revisions, and test results.
- Provide documentation to leadership or external advisors when requested to support SR&ED claims.
Purchasing & Vendor Coordination
- Specify mechanical components and materials required for projects and maintain accurate parts lists.
- Source new or non-standard components and obtain quotes as required.
- Evaluate vendors based on technical fit, cost, lead time, and quality.
- Collaborate with Project Manager to align purchasing with production schedules.
- Support cost reduction and part standardization initiatives across projects.
Change Management & Continuous Improvement
- Support engineering change processes by updating drawings, models, and documentation.
- Maintain organized, version-controlled design files.
- Identify opportunities to simplify designs, reduce cost, or improve reliability.
- Contribute to improving internal design standards, templates, and best practices.
Success Metrics- Accuracy and completeness of design documentation
- Reduction in production rework due to design issues
- Timeliness of design deliverables
- Adoption of standardized parts and assemblies
- Positive 360° feedback from engineering, production, and service teams
