Black Diamond Group’s MSS East Stoney Creek department has a full-time position for an Operations manager.
Reporting to the Branch Manager, the OperationsService Manager is responsible for monitoring and overseeing the safety, cost, schedule, and execution of work across all yard operations and assigned projects. This role provides leadership, training, and direction to service technicians and subcontractors, ensuring operational efficiency and high-quality service delivery. The Service Manager is accountable for timely and accurate reporting, both internally and for clients.
Overall ownership of the yard, including its crew, tools, equipment, and capital assets, is essential. The Service Manager will ensure that processes are implemented, maintained, and consistently followed. While tasking and assignments are largely self-directed, the role requires sound judgment in utilizing resources effectively to meet operational goals. All duties must be performed with a high level of professionalism and integrity, ensuring safety, cost control, and schedule adherence at all times.
The ideal candidate is an experienced operations or service leader with a strong background in managing yard operations, service teams, equipment, and field projects. They are safety-focused and accountable, with proven ability to manage costs, schedules, resources, and quality while ensuring processes are consistently followed. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader who can effectively direct and develop technicians and subcontractors, exercise sound judgment, maintain accurate reporting, and deliver reliable service with professionalism and integrity.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Plan, coordinate, and oversee all yard and project-related activities to ensure work is clearly defined, organized, and completed efficiently.
- Work closely with the Branch Manager to develop and maintain project plans, yard schedules, and required operational documentation.
- Coordinate manpower, equipment, materials, and other resources to support timely and cost-effective project execution.
- Maintain regular communication with the Branch Manager and Fleet Administrator, providing daily operational updates and weekly reports on progress, deliverables, fleet activity, and overall yard status.
- Monitor daily yard activities to ensure priorities, productivity targets, schedules, and operational standards are met.
- Oversee day-to-day yard operations, maintaining a safe, organized, productive, and efficient work environment.
- Supervise, coach, and support service technicians and yard personnel, including training, development, and performance guidance.
- Track labour hours against project estimates, monitor costs, and proactively identify and address budget variances.
- Monitor and report on completed work, fleet movements, equipment locations, and overall yard activity.
- Identify operational challenges and implement corrective actions to improve efficiency, productivity, and service delivery.
- Coordinate service calls and provide operational support to field teams as required.
- Manage yard-related expenses within approved budgets and company guidelines.
- Ensure tools, equipment, materials, and capital assets are properly maintained, accounted for, and utilized effectively.
- Support project execution by coordinating yard activities and resources to meet project requirements.
- Ensure compliance with company health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures across all yard operations.
- Act as the primary safety lead within the yard, promoting a strong culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Promptly report incidents to the appropriate stakeholders, including Corporate Safety, and ensure proper documentation and follow-up.
- Participate in safety audits, risk assessments, and incident investigations, implementing corrective and preventative actions as required.
- Collaborate with HSE teams to develop, implement, and continuously improve safety standards, procedures, and controls.
- Attend and actively participate in weekly operations meetings, monthly planning sessions, and other internal meetings as required.
- Review, forecast, and update project costs, schedules, and operational plans on a weekly basis.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as required to support branch and operational objectives.
Qualifications And Skills
- 3–5+ years of experience in operations, service, yard, fleet, or project coordination/management, preferably in construction, modular, equipment, or a related industry.
- Proven experience supervising and leading field, service, or yard personnel, including training, coaching, and performance management.
- Strong ability to plan, coordinate, and prioritize manpower, equipment, materials, and work schedules.
- Experience tracking labour hours, project costs, budgets, and schedules, with the ability to identify and address variances.
- Strong health, safety, and environmental awareness, with experience supporting safety programs, incident reporting, audits, and investigations.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and reporting skills, with the ability to provide accurate operational updates and documentation.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to identify operational issues and implement practical solutions.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and operational/project management systems; experience with ERP or fleet management systems is an asset.
- Ability to work effectively with Branch Management, Fleet, HSE, technicians, subcontractors, and field teams.
- Hands-on, accountable, and results-oriented approach with a strong focus on safety, cost control, productivity, quality, and customer service.
- Valid driver's license and ability to work in a yard/field environment as required.
- The successful candidate will be required to complete pre-employment and/or post-incident drug and alcohol testing, in accordance with company policy and applicable legislation.
