QA Engineer
Toronto, Ontario | In-office | Manual & Automated Testing
About the Role
Brainyyack is looking for a QA Engineer to help deliver reliable, intuitive software for our clients.
You will work closely with developers, product managers, designers, and delivery teams to validate
requirements, identify defects, and strengthen quality throughout the development lifecycle.
This is a hands-on role combining manual testing with test automation across web applications, APIs,
and integrations. You will bring a thoughtful, detail-oriented approach to testing, communicate risks
clearly, and help teams make informed release decisions.
Location and Work Arrangement
This role is based in Toronto, Ontario, and requires in-office attendance at Brainyyack's Toronto office.
You must be able to commute to the office and collaborate with the team in person.
Key Responsibilities
- Review requirements, user stories, and acceptance criteria; identify gaps, edge cases, and testability
concerns early.
- Create and maintain test plans, test cases, test data, and traceable coverage of critical business
workflows.
- Perform functional, exploratory, regression, smoke, integration, and cross-browser testing.
- Test APIs and integrations, including authentication, validation, error handling, and data consistency.
- Document defects with clear reproduction steps, expected and actual results, severity, and supporting
evidence.
- Collaborate with developers to investigate defects, verify fixes, and prevent recurring issues.
- Build and maintain automated tests for stable, high-value workflows; investigate failures and reduce
flaky tests.
- Run regression checks within delivery pipelines and support release testing and user acceptance testing.
- Report test results, coverage gaps, and release risks clearly; recommend improvements to testing
practices.
Required Qualifications
- Professional experience testing software applications, with a strong foundation in manual testing and
defect management.
- Understanding of the software development and testing lifecycles, Agile delivery, and risk-based testing.
- Ability to design effective test cases using boundary values, equivalence classes, negative scenarios,
and end-to-end workflows.
- Hands-on experience with at least one automation framework, such as Playwright, Cypress, or Selenium.
- Ability to write and maintain test scripts using JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, or C#.
- Experience testing REST APIs using Postman or equivalent tools, with an understanding of HTTP, JSON,
and authentication.
- Working knowledge of SQL for validating records, relationships, and data changes in relational
databases.
- Familiarity with Git, CI/CD concepts, and issue tracking tools such as Jira or Asana.
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and clear written and verbal communication.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize testing by risk, and collaborate constructively with
cross-functional teams.
- Ability to work in person at the Toronto office.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Experience with insurance products, including claims, policy administration, or adjuster workflows.
- Mobile application testing on iOS and Android, including familiarity with Appium.
- Performance testing with tools such as k6 or JMeter; accessibility testing using automated tools and
manual checks.
- Test management tools such as TestRail, Xray, or Zephyr; CI/CD integration using AWS or GitHub Actions.
- Experience testing AI-enabled features, including inconsistent outputs, failure scenarios, and human
review workflows.
- Use of AI tools to assist with test design or automation, with independent validation and appropriate
handling of confidential data.
- ISTQB certification or equivalent testing education.
What Success Looks Like
Well-tested critical workflows, clear and actionable defect reports, dependable automated checks,
and timely visibility into release risks. Consistent collaboration that helps reduce escaped defects and
improve the user experience.
