Position Summary

Reporting to the Clinical Manager, Integrated Stroke Unit, the successful applicant will be responsible for comprehensive nursing care throughout the BCHS and must meet the following criteria.

Mandatory Qualifications

Graduate of an accredited college nursing program
Registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification
Experience in Neuroscience, Inpatient Stroke and Rehabilitation (minimum 1 year)

Safety (patient, worker & workplace) is a BCHS Corporate Priority. The successful applicant will demonstrate good stewardship in the identification, reporting and mitigation of unsafe acts or conditions.

Preferred Competencies

Completion of Hemispheres Stroke Competency, Aphasia Training, CNS, STAND assessments
Understanding of rehabilitation nursing philosophy of care and Self-Management principles
Demonstrated knowledge of Canadian Best Practice Recommendations for Stroke Care
Demonstrated interest in stroke and understanding of BCHS as a District Stroke Centre
Experience caring for persons with Aphasia and use of Supportive Conversation techniques
Reliable individual with excellent attendance record and able to work all shifts

Responsibilities

Provide comprehensive nursing care in the Integrated Stroke Unit, supporting patients throughout their care and rehabilitation. Identify, report, and help mitigate unsafe acts or conditions while collaborating with colleagues and external partners.

Requirements

Applicants must graduate from an accredited college nursing program, be registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario, hold current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification, and have at least one year of experience in neuroscience, inpatient stroke, and rehabilitation. The role also requires strong assessment, communication, critical-thinking, prioritization, and teamwork skills; stroke-related training and experience supporting people with aphasia are preferred.
