About Bree

Bree is a consumer finance platform that brings better, faster, and cheaper financial services to over half the Canadian population who live paycheck to paycheck. We operate in a huge, but overlooked market in a country with the least amount of financial technology innovation in the developed world. Our first act is to become the cheapest and best provider of short-term credit to the 20 million people in Canada who live paycheck to paycheck.

More than 800,000 Canadians have already signed up with Bree and we believe we are just scratching the surface. We are in an exciting place where we have product market fit, explosive growth, and a clear path to becoming one of the most important FinTechs in Canada.

We have had zero voluntary employee churn. We were part of Y Combinator in 2021 and raised a $2M seed round shortly after.

About the Role

Finance & Accounting at Bree is a small team supported by an external bookkeeper. That setup has served us well, but as the business grows we want more of the accounting sitting in house, where the person doing the work is close to the business and can move at the same speed as everyone else.

We're also moving off QuickBooks onto a new ERP. That gives whoever takes this role a rare opening: a chance to revamp the close alongside the new system rather than work around a process that's already set. It's a meaningful project on top of the day-to-day, and the person in this seat will help shape how we do things going forward.

This is the role for someone who wants to own a close end to end, not be the third reviewer on one.

What you'll actually do

Own AP and AR end to end. Review what comes in, resolve what doesn't tie, chase vendors who go quiet, and keep aging current on both sides so nothing gets paid late and nothing gets collected late.

Bring the journal entries in house. Recurring and one-off, each one posted with support you'd be comfortable handing to an auditor without explanation. Much of this sits with our bookkeeper today and will shift to you over time.

Run the close. Accruals, account analysis, reconciliations, working papers - month-end and year-end, under ASPE, on a calendar people can plan around.

Produce the statements. We run two entities. You'll build the financials, the intercompany, and the schedules behind the management reporting package our stakeholders actually read.

Take the lead on the ERP implementation. Configuration, data validation, testing, documentation, and deciding how the workflow should run once we're live. The Controller will be in it with you, but this is yours to drive.

Automate what shouldn't be manual. We use LLMs day to day. You'll spot the workflows that don't need a person and automate them.

Support the audit. Prepare the schedules, answer the questions, and close the loop on anything the auditors raise. Finance is a two-person team, so this is shared work between you and the Controller.

Who we're looking for

CPA is a plus, not a requirement. We care more about what you've actually done. Strong hands-on experience beats a designation on its own.

4+ years of full-cycle accounting, including owning a month-end close rather than contributing to one.

Real ASPE grounding. When something unusual shows up, you work through it, land on a position, and write down why - before anyone asks.

Multi-entity experience. Consolidations, intercompany, and the discipline to keep two sets of books clean at the same time.

Extreme attention to detail. You chase a $400 variance because you don't know yet whether it's $400 or the first $400 of something bigger.

Technically literate. Excel and Google Sheets at scale are table stakes. SQL, or the appetite to learn it fast - our data lives in Snowflake and we query it through Metabase, and the good questions get answered there, not in a report someone exports for you.

High agency. Nobody is going to hand you a close checklist. If you spot a gap on Monday, it's documented by Tuesday.

Concise communicator. You use the minimum number of words to get a message across.

Low ego. You'll build a financial statement in the morning, chase a vendor invoice at lunch, and test an ERP workflow in the afternoon. None of it is beneath you.
