This is a high-impact leadership opportunity for an experienced engineering professional who wants to have a direct influence on people, products, processes, innovation and profitability.
Reporting to the VP of Operations, the Director of Engineering & Technical Services will lead our Engineering, CAD, SolidWorks and Product Development functions, providing the technical direction and leadership required to support continued organizational growth.
This role is ideal for a hands-on engineering leader who can move comfortably between strategic planning and technical problem-solving - someone who can develop people, improve processes, optimize designs, launch new products and make sound decisions when timelines are tight.
This is a fully in-office position based in Wingham, Ontario. Candidates must be willing to relocate to the Wingham area.
What You'll Lead
You will provide leadership across:
Engineering and structural design
CAD and SolidWorks
Technical Services
Product Development
Design optimization and standardization
Continuous improvement and process development
Technical documentation and document control
Product launches and new product development
Engineering quality, compliance and design standards
You’ll play a key role in ensuring our teams have the people, processes, tools and technical direction required to deliver high-quality solutions on time and within budget.
What You'll Do
Leadership & Strategy
Lead and develop the Engineering, CAD, SolidWorks and Product Design teams.
Establish clear departmental priorities, roadmaps, objectives and performance expectations.
Recruit, coach, mentor and develop team members while building a strong succession pipeline.
Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, collaboration and continuous improvement.
Establish and manage departmental budgets and resources.
Develop and monitor KPIs that support business, operational and customer objectives.
Partner with Executive Leadership to execute strategic initiatives and support organizational growth.
Manage workflow and priorities to ensure projects and deliverables remain on schedule.
Provide leadership during manufacturing, installation and field challenges, ensuring effective technical resolutions.
Engineering & Technical Leadership
Provide technical direction and design guidance to the engineering and technical teams.
Review and verify design drawings and technical documentation to ensure they meet required specifications and standards.
Ensure structural designs and engineering calculations are accurate, compliant and fit for purpose.
Maintain a strong working knowledge of Britespan products, manufacturing processes and quality standards.
Develop and maintain design standards that consider material tolerances, manufacturing capabilities and supplier specifications.
Support the development and implementation of technical strategies, standards and policies.
Coordinate technical development activities, schedules, testing and resolution of engineering design challenges.
Work with third-party engineers, architects, customers and other technical professionals.
Provide technical credibility and leadership when working with internal and external engineering partners.
Product Development & Innovation
Lead new product development and product launch initiatives from concept through implementation.
Identify opportunities to improve existing products through design optimization, standardization and innovation.
Develop solutions that improve product performance, manufacturing efficiency and overall profitability.
Evaluate new materials, technologies and design approaches.
Partner with Operations, Sales, Costing & Estimating and Quality to ensure products are commercially viable and operationally successful.
Balance technical requirements with manufacturing feasibility, cost and customer needs.
Continuous Improvement & Profitability
Identify opportunities to streamline engineering and technical processes.
Drive design optimization and cost-reduction initiatives.
Improve departmental efficiency, workflow and turnaround times.
Work closely with Costing & Estimating to optimize designs and material usage.
Support initiatives that improve manufacturing efficiency and reduce waste.
Develop practical, scalable solutions to complex technical and operational challenges.
Use data, KPIs and business objectives to guide departmental decision-making.

You will help ensure that technical decisions support the broader needs of the business while maintaining a strong focus on quality, customer experience, cost and delivery timelines.
What We're Looking For
Education & Professional Qualifications
Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.).
Qualified to seal engineering documents in a relevant field of engineering, or eligible to obtain the appropriate registration within six months of hire.
Strong understanding of Canadian and/or U.S. Building Codes.
Strong understanding of structural engineering principles.
Mechanical aptitude and practical understanding of construction.
Experience
7+ years of engineering and technical management experience.
Proven leadership experience managing engineering and/or technical teams.
Experience in structural design and engineering.
Experience with technical design, product development and drafting.
Experience working with multiple building material types.
Demonstrated experience leading continuous improvement initiatives.
Experience with costing, material optimization and building design.
Demonstrated experience bringing new products from development through launch.
Experience working in a manufacturing, construction or engineered-product environment is an asset.
Technical Knowledge
Strong understanding of structural engineering and design.
Familiarity with welding, drafting practices, tolerances, welding symbols and fabrication procedures is an asset.
Experience with STAAD and/or RAM Elements is an asset.
Experience with SolidWorks, AutoCAD and PDM is an asset.
Strong Microsoft Office skills.
Ability to interpret and communicate technical drawings, specifications and engineering documentation.
