We are looking for an experienced Professional Engineer to join our Engineering team and play a key role in the design, analysis, approval and continuous improvement of our innovative fabric-covered building systems.
This is an opportunity for a technically strong engineer who enjoys solving complex structural challenges, working collaboratively across departments and seeing their engineering work move from design to manufacturing to installation in the field.
Reporting to the VP of Operations, you will be responsible for engineering design, structural analysis, technical review and approval while working closely with our design, manufacturing, sales and product development teams.
You will also have the opportunity to contribute to new product development, engineering standards, process improvement and technical innovation.
What You'll Do
Engineering Design & Analysis
Develop, review and approve engineering designs, calculations and cost estimates.
Perform structural analysis and engineering design for fabric building systems, rigid frame systems, foundations and associated structural components.
Complete Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and structural modelling using tools such as RAM Elements, STAAD or equivalent software.
Prepare and validate engineering calculation packages.
Evaluate foundation reactions and structural performance.
Maintain load tables, rating charts and engineering reference documentation.
Ensure engineering solutions meet applicable building codes, standards, project specifications and structural performance requirements.
Incorporate manufacturing feasibility into engineering and product design decisions.
Identify opportunities to optimize productivity, materials and part design.
Professional Engineering & Regulatory Compliance
As a Professional Engineer at Britespan, you will have an important role in ensuring our engineering work meets the highest standards of professional practice and public safety.
Review, authenticate and seal engineering drawings and technical documents.
Maintain current knowledge of applicable Canadian and U.S. building codes, standards and regulations.
Ensure engineering work complies with applicable legislation, codes, standards and company requirements.
Maintain professional engineering registrations and stamps in applicable Canadian jurisdictions.
Participate in regulatory and certification programs, including CSA A660, AWS, CWB, CE and other relevant compliance programs.
Participate in internal and external audits.
Maintain accurate engineering records, documentation and calculation traceability.
Support engineering quality assurance and quality control processes.
Project Support & Collaboration
You'll work closely with teams throughout Britespan and external partners to ensure projects move forward successfully.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, third-party engineers, consultants, contractors and customers.
Provide technical input throughout the project lifecycle.
Research and evaluate technical data to support engineering recommendations.
Monitor project progress and help drive project milestones and deliverables.
Work with Management and Sales to develop technical inputs and quote models.
Provide technical support to resolve design and engineering challenges.
Communicate complex technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Manufacturing & Operational Support
Your engineering expertise will extend beyond the drawing board.
Ensure engineering designs are aligned with manufacturing capabilities and production requirements.
Provide technical support to manufacturing teams.
Assist in resolving design, fabrication and implementation challenges.
Support the integration of engineering solutions into manufacturing and production workflows.
Conduct site visits, inspections, assessments and field investigations as required.
Monitor construction, installation, testing or commissioning activities to verify compliance with design specifications.
Product Development & Continuous Improvement

Assist in developing and training engineers, technologists, designers and other technical staff.
What We're Looking For
Education & Professional Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university.
Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in good standing with a Canadian provincial or territorial engineering body.
Certificate of Authorization is required.
Must be able to stamp structural drawings.
Familiarity with Canadian and U.S. Building Codes.
Technical Experience
5–8 years of progressive engineering experience, preferably in structural engineering, building systems, pre-engineered buildings, fabric structures or a related industry.
Strong knowledge of structural engineering principles, load analysis and building design.
Experience with structural analysis and engineering design.
Experience with steel design, foundation systems and connection design.
Experience preparing and reviewing engineering calculations, technical reports, design packages and construction documentation.
Experience reviewing and sealing engineering drawings and documents.
Experience applying Canadian and/or U.S. building codes and design standards.
Experience supporting manufacturing, fabrication, installation or construction activities.
Experience with costing materials and buildings.
Experience with quality assurance, audits and continuous improvement initiatives.
Experience with multiple building material types.
Software Experience
Experience with structural analysis and engineering software such as:
RAM Elements
STAAD.Pro
SolidWorks
AutoCAD
SAP2000
RISA
Dlubal
or equivalent engineering software.
Strong Microsoft Office skills, including Excel, Word and Outlook, are also required.
Experience with fabric membrane structures, tensioned fabric systems and pre-engineered building systems is considered a strong asset.

Work Environment
This is an in-office position at Britespan's corporate office in Wingham, Ontario, with manufacturing site visits and field activities as required.
The role may involve:
Manufacturing site visits, with required PPE.
Site inspections and field investigations.
Construction and installation monitoring.
Working within manufacturing environments.
Occasional travel as required for projects and technical activities.
