Overview:
- An instructor in our program will possess or demonstrate strong connected understandings of relevant knowledge for teaching (e.g. Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge);
- Professionally bring to life the content, knowledge, and competencies relevant to Technological Education specific methods and foundations courses being taught while modeling the Standards of Practice and Ethical Standards of the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT);
- Enact curriculum and teaching approaches that engage students in conversations on educational inclusion and equity related to Technological Education course content and concepts;
- Be aware of a variety of critical practices relevant to their Technological Education BBT subject area that can support all students, attend to our unconscious biases, and encourage inclusivity.
Duties:
The duties and nominal hours for an Education Instructor – Practicum Advisor are established by the employer. The nominal workload includes scheduled contact time with students as well as non-contact time. Duties may include collaboration with associate teachers and principals, meeting students in-person or on-line, marking / grading, attending program meetings and completing mandatory training as required.
- Become familiar with Brock University policies and adhere to them.
- Complete the required Brock instructor’s online tutorial prior to first class.
- Use a provided Brock email address for all Brock-related communications with teacher candidates and program personnel.
- Collaborate and co-plan with co-instructors.
- Effectively deliver all aspects of the course in designated mode(s) (lecture, blended etc.)
- Manage instructional contact time and non-contact time. Contact time includes all classes as scheduled. Non-contact time includes preparation of lecture materials, managing the learning management system(s), student consultation, marking or grading, holding office hours, and other course administration as may be required such as attending required meetings with program personnel.
- Adapt instructional and assessment strategies to accommodate diverse adult learning needs.
- Advise, mentor, and provide feedback to teacher candidates in relation to Technological Education program course concepts/content and the Professional Standards of Practice and Ethical Standards of the OCT.
- Work collegially and collaborate/instruct with course team lead(s) and/or other instructors.
- Attend course team meetings and debriefings.
- Advise, coach, mentor, and provide feedback to technological education candidates in Block 2 Practicum (8R75) with reference to the Teacher Education Program Handbook and Log of Teaching Practice from Block 1.
- Work with associate teachers and principals and respond to correspondence in a timely manner.
- Visit and liaise with associate teachers and principals as needed.
- Participate, as warranted, in the Department’s referral procedures.
- Evaluate and debrief with teacher candidates during the practicum.
- Manage course records including attendance and submitting final grades by university and/or Program deadlines.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of five years of High School teaching or leadership experience in one or more of the following BBTs: Communications, Computers, Construction, Green Industries, Hairstyling & Aesthetics, Health Care, Hospitality & Tourism, Manufacturing, Technological Design, Transportation, and Technological Education program familiarity. Note: as teacher candidates with different BBT specialities are grouped together into course sections, qualified applicants may only be offered a portion of a course section teaching contract to cover practicum advisor supervision of a subset of the course section’s students.
- Master's degree or other recognized specialization in the field of technological education such as a 3-level Ontario College of Teachers additional qualification Honour Technological Education Specialist specialization.
- Demonstrated leadership in curriculum, education and/or professional development as it relates to technological education.
- Familiarity with the Technological Education program; Ontario curriculum, supporting documents, and approved resources relevant to technological education classrooms and safety.
- Exhibits contemporary knowledge of educational theory and pedagogy including assessment relevant to technological education.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills especially in providing growth-oriented feedback for beginning technological education teacher candidate development.
- Demonstrated knowledge of social justice and equity, particularly to sexual and gender diversity, anti-racism, and Indigenous and decolonizing practices.
- Experience with technological education teacher candidates or other adult learners.
- Competency in using educational technology and platforms for content creation, course management and delivery.
- Experience with blended modes of course delivery.
- Knowledgeable of technological education safety practices applicable to secondary school contexts.
- Experience facilitating challenging conversations and difficult topics with adult learners.
- Experience with instructional design for blended modes of course delivery.
