Automation Engineer
Location: Oakville, ON
Term: 6-Month Contract
Travel: Approximately 25% across North America
Introduction
Brunel is currently seeking an experienced Automation Engineer for a contract opportunity based in Oakville, Ontario. This role is ideal for a hands-on automation professional with strong PLC, HMI, and SCADA experience who enjoys working in a project-driven environment from design through commissioning.
Working as part of a multidisciplinary Electrical, Instrumentation & Controls team, you will support the development and delivery of custom automation solutions for industrial process applications. The successful candidate will contribute throughout the project lifecycle, including design, programming, testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and client support.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and implement PLC, HMI, and SCADA applications for industrial process systems.
- Review and interpret engineering deliverables including P&IDs, electrical schematics, I/O lists, control narratives, instrument lists, and network architecture drawings.
- Support project execution from design through commissioning and startup activities.
- Participate in client meetings and collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Develop automation documentation including functional specifications, control narratives, alarm lists, and testing procedures.
- Assist with Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), commissioning, and startup activities.
- Troubleshoot automation systems and provide technical support remotely and on-site.
- Coordinate activities with electrical, process, mechanical, and project engineering teams.
- Manage assigned project scope, schedules, budgets, risks, and deliverables.
- Support network architecture development and industrial communications integration.
- Maintain engineering standards, procedures, and best practices.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of automation, controls, or process control engineering experience.
- Strong experience with PLC programming and industrial automation systems.
- Hands-on experience developing HMI and SCADA applications.
- Experience with industrial commissioning, startup, FAT, and SAT activities.
- Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, electrical drawings, control schematics, and instrumentation documentation.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Experience working directly with clients and multidisciplinary project teams.
- Valid driver's license and passport.
- Ability and willingness to travel up to 25%.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility for registration.

- Knowledge of industrial networking and communications protocols.
- Experience with VFDs, instrumentation, process control systems, and distributed control architectures.
- Previous experience with water treatment, wastewater treatment, chemical processing, pharmaceutical, food & beverage, or other industrial process environments.
- System integration experience supporting projects from design through commissioning.
