Project Cost Engineer
Introduction
We are currently seeking an experienced Project Cost Engineer to support a major industrial capital project on a contract basis. This role will provide project controls, cost engineering, forecasting, reporting, and schedule support throughout project execution.
The successful candidate will work closely with project management, engineering, construction, and project controls teams to monitor project performance, evaluate project impacts, support change management activities, and ensure effective cost and schedule control across the project lifecycle.
Responsibilities
- Provide project controls support, including cost analysis, forecasting, reporting, and schedule monitoring.
- Analyze project performance against approved cost and schedule baselines and identify risks, trends, and corrective actions.
- Assess the impact of design changes, construction changes, RFIs, differing site conditions, and process improvements on project cost and schedule.
- Prepare and validate estimates for labour, materials, equipment, change orders, and scope modifications.
- Review engineering drawings, calculations, and construction documentation to support cost and schedule evaluations.
- Review and track engineering submittals and coordinate progress with project stakeholders.
- Identify out-of-scope changes and quantity variances through design reviews and material take-offs.
- Validate project progress through field verification and review of contractor-reported progress.
- Review contractor schedules and ensure alignment with project milestones and the overall master schedule.
- Review contractor equipment logs, timesheets, invoices, and contracts to support project controls activities.
- Support project change management processes and reporting requirements.
- Assist with the preparation of weekly, monthly, and quarterly project reports.
- Ensure compliance with project safety, quality, and project controls standards.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent with 11+ years of experience in engineering, construction, project controls, or a related business field, including leadership experience in project controls; or
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or a related discipline with 7+ years of relevant experience, including leadership experience in project controls.
- Experience in project controls, cost engineering, forecasting, reporting, and schedule analysis.
- Strong understanding of engineering, procurement, and construction processes.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced project environment.
- Fluency in English.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Primavera, Aconex, EcoSys, SAP, or similar project management and project controls systems.
- Experience supporting large industrial, mining, infrastructure, energy, or construction projects.
