Job Overview

The Database Administrator at Butterfield & Robinson thrives on solving complex data challenges, enjoys working across multiple database environments, and takes pride in clean, reliable data.

The Database Administrator works with the Technology, Data and Digital Experience teams under the direction of the Chief Technology Officer.

The Database Administrator manages our databases and data quality, and will lead data cleaning and migration for migrations. The role works with teams across the business to design, maintain, and optimize data flows between internal and external systems. This position requires a balance of strong technical expertise, analytical thinking, and good communication skills.

As our only database specialist, the Database Administrator is the main point of contact for database management and data related application support. Alongside responsibility for servers, backups and security, the role involves investigating application issues, supporting users and understanding how our front-end applications access, update and display data. This suits someone who enjoys a varied, hands-on role, combining database administration with day-to-day application troubleshooting and support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage, design, and maintain our databases, especially PostgreSQL, as well as Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Lead data migration for projects where it is required: map fields, move data, then check and reconcile it after each load.
  • Monitor and tune database performance and reliability, including backups, access, and security.
  • Develop and maintain data integrations using ETL/ELT tools.
  • Clean and standardize data: remove duplicates, fix errors, and set rules that keep data clean in CRM/ERP and other systems.
  • Support CRM/ERP data requests and configuration changes with business users.
  • Maintain existing SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) reports.
  • Write and maintain Python scripts (NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib) for data transformation, analysis, and automation.
  • Write, update and maintain SQL functions, both for and with our developers.
  • Collaborate with Agile teams, participating stand-ups.
  • Partner with the Senior Business Analyst (Power BI) to ensure data consistency, accessibility, and integrity across analytical and reporting environments.
  • Translate business needs into data solutions, reports, and pseudo-code where needed.
  • Create and maintain documentation of data structures, integrations, and workflows.
  • Provide ad hoc data analysis and reporting support using Excel and other tools.
  • Oversee ongoing development and maintenance of data transfer protocols with our vendors

Essential Skills, Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience as a database administrator, or in database engineering or development.
  • Advanced SQL, with strong hands-on experience managing PostgreSQL databases. Microsoft SQL Server experience is an asset.
  • Proven experience cleaning and migrating data, including at least one major migration.
  • Experience setting data quality rules for large data sets.
  • Experience with SSRS or Power BI reporting, and with travel or booking systems such as Peak 15, an asset.
  • Experience with ETL/integration tools - Experience with: Dell Boomi, MuleSoft, TIBCO Scribe, n8n a strong asset.
  • Solid Python skills, particularly for data handling – experience with: NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib a strong asset.
  • Strong Excel skills, including advanced formulas, pivot tables, and data modeling.
  • Strong understanding of data governance and security best practices.
  • Excellent communication and documentation abilities.
  • Experience preparing data for AI or machine learning projects is an asset.
  • Familiarity with AI tools that connect to databases, such as Claude, ChatGPT, is an asset.
  • Comfortable as the sole database expert, making sound decisions without a team of database peers.

Skills and Characteristics

  • Creative and independent thinker with sound judgment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact with all levels of the business.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Understanding and appreciation of a global, creative, and flexible work environment.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities and deliver high-quality work while working independently.
  • Must be highly organized, flexible and have the demonstrated ability to take initiative.
