Original job description

At CAE – We are all for shaping the future.

Are you looking to elevate your aviation career while maintaining better work‑life balance? Join CAE and pursue your passion for aviation without extensive travel or missing important holidays and life events.

The Second‑in‑Command Mentor (SCM) program is designed to train and qualify pilots to provide right‑seat support to clients attending training courses at CAE facilities. We are seeking local candidates for this on‑call SCM position at our Montreal location.

CAE offers a comprehensive training program that helps transform your skills and experience into a valuable support role, assisting clients throughout their simulator training as a qualified second‑in‑command.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide right‑seat support in the simulator to a wide range of clients with varying experience levels and training objectives.
  • Support training conducted under multiple regulatory authorities, including Transport Canada (TC), FAA Part 91 and 135, EASA, and other National Aviation Authorities (NAAs).
  • Maintain proficiency as a qualified crew member, even when not holding a type rating on the supported aircraft.
  • Provide seat support during simulator evaluation events conducted by CAE or regulatory authorities validating simulator performance.
  • Deliver a professional, safe, and customer‑focused training experience in a collaborative team environment.

CAE seeks experienced pilots who value CRM, thrive in a team setting, and are committed to delivering a high‑quality training experience.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Commercial Pilot Licence or Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL preferred).
  • Airplane Multi‑Engine Land (MEL) rating.
  • Instrument rating (airplane multi‑engine land) with a minimum of 50 hours of multi‑engine and instrument experience.
  • Minimum of 250 total flight hours with a written IATRA, or 750 total flight hours with completed SAMRA and SAMRON exams.
  • Ability to provide a minimum of 35 simulator events within a rolling 12‑month period to remain current and eligible for recurrent training.
  • Must reside within the Greater Montreal Area.
  • Availability for workdays of up to 11 or more hours (typically no more than 6 hours in the simulator at one time).
  • Ability to commit 3 to 5 weeks or more to complete initial training on the assigned platform.
  • Availability to work any day of the week and at any time of day, based on personal availability.
  • Must meet all TSA requirements.
  • Must honor and commit to all scheduled training sessions once agreed upon.
  • Scheduling is a minimum of 5 hours per assignment and may occur 24/7.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated professionalism with the ability to create a welcoming and effective learning environment.
  • Strong communication skills across all mediums (verbal and written) and at all organizational levels.
  • Strong commitment to customer service, delivering continuous “red‑carpet” service.
  • Interest in mentoring and supporting pilots from diverse operational and cultural backgrounds.

This Role Is Well Suited For

  • Aspiring aviation professionals who meet the qualifications and are looking to build a strong professional foundation through exposure to world‑class training; and
  • Experienced pilots seeking to step away from the rigors of frequent travel and line flying while remaining active in the cockpit and contributing to high‑quality simulator training.

In addition to receiving formal SIC simulator training on select aircraft types, SCMs may have the opportunity to earn and attend, at no cost, advanced programs and enrichment courses offered by CAE.
