Portfolio Management / Overlay – Functional Lead

Toronto, Canada – Hybrid

$90-100/hour DOE

1+ Year Contract

Position Overview

We are seeking a Senior Portfolio Management Functional Lead with deep expertise in wealth management, brokerage, portfolio management, and investment technology. This individual will serve as a key liaison between business, technology, and operations, helping to define and deliver solutions supporting portfolio management, portfolio modelling, overlays, performance reporting, and related wealth management capabilities.

The ideal candidate will bring hands-on experience managing or supporting a Portfolio Overlay function within a brokerage environment, combined with strong knowledge of portfolio analytics and wealth technology platforms.

Key Responsibilities

Serve as the functional subject matter expert for portfolio management, portfolio modelling, overlays, and performance reporting.
Partner with business stakeholders, technology teams, and operational leaders to define requirements and deliver portfolio management solutions.
Lead the functional design and implementation of wealth and investment management technology platforms.
Translate complex business requirements into clear functional specifications, user stories, process flows, and technology requirements.
Evaluate and recommend solutions related to portfolio construction, modelling, overlay management, performance measurement, and reporting.
Support implementation, integration, testing, and optimization of portfolio management platforms.
Develop and present recommendations, business cases, and executive-level presentations to senior leadership.
Identify opportunities to improve portfolio management processes, technology capabilities, and operational efficiency.
Work closely with portfolio managers, investment teams, brokerage stakeholders, product teams, technology, and operations.
Provide subject matter expertise throughout the full project lifecycle, from requirements gathering and solution design through implementation and ongoing optimization.

Required Qualifications & Experience

Senior-level experience in portfolio management, wealth management, or brokerage.
Direct experience managing or supporting a Portfolio Overlay team/function within a brokerage or wealth management organization.
Experience working within a major brokerage or wealth management institution such as RBC, National Bank, Richardson, or a similar organization.
Strong understanding of portfolio management and investment analytics, including: Time-Weighted Rate of Return (TWRR); Dollar-Weighted Rate of Return / Internal Rate of Return (IRR); Portfolio modelling; Portfolio overlays; Performance measurement and reporting
Hands-on experience implementing, configuring, or supporting wealth/investment technology platforms.
Strong understanding of the intersection between portfolio management business processes and technology solutions.
Experience working in a brokerage branch environment is highly preferred.

Business & Delivery Experience

The following experience would be highly valued:

Previous experience as a Business Analyst supporting portfolio management or wealth management initiatives.
Experience as a Senior Product Owner, Business Architect, or Functional Lead within portfolio management, investment management, or wealth technology.
Experience gathering and translating business requirements into technology solutions.
Experience leading cross-functional initiatives involving business, technology, operations, and investment stakeholders.
Proven ability to manage competing priorities and operate effectively within complex financial-services environments.

Education & Credentials

CIM, CFA, or equivalent investment/portfolio management designation required.
CFA designation preferred.
Relevant university degree in Finance, Business, Economics, Computer Science, or a related discipline is preferred.

Communication & Leadership

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to communicate complex portfolio management and technology concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Demonstrated ability to create executive-level presentations and decks.
Strong ability to formulate, articulate, and present recommendations to senior leadership.
Comfortable influencing stakeholders and driving decisions without direct authority.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is a senior portfolio management professional who understands both the investment business and the technology supporting it. They have firsthand experience in a brokerage or wealth management environment, understand how portfolio overlays and modelling work in practice, and can translate those requirements into scalable technology solutions.

This role is particularly well suited to someone who has progressed from a portfolio management or investment operations background into a Business Analyst, Product Owner, Business Architect, or Functional Lead role and is comfortable operating across business, technology, and operations.
