A signing bonus may be available to eligible applicants joining the Regular Force. Conditions apply.
Overview:
As members of the military, General Surgeons belong to the Medical Specialist occupation within the Canadian Armed Forces. They provide trauma and general surgical care to CAF members in Canada and during international operations, including peace-support and humanitarian missions.
General Surgeons are clinical leaders within CAF Health Services. They lead multidisciplinary surgical and emergency-care teams and serve as mentors and educators to Medical Officers, Nursing Officers, Physician Assistants, Medical Technicians, Operating Room Technicians and Diagnostic Technicians.
CAF General Surgeons maintain their clinical skills and readiness by holding staff positions within civilian tertiary-care hospitals across Canada. They also participate in military training, field exercises, education, research and potential domestic or international deployments.
Responsibilities:
- Provide surgical consultations and care to CAF members in Canada and during international deployments.
- Lead surgical and emergency-care teams responsible for treating injured and ill patients.
- Assess and manage trauma and acute general-surgery cases in civilian and deployed environments.
- Educate and advise multidisciplinary Health Services teams on trauma and general surgical care.
- Mentor Medical Officers, Nursing Officers, Physician Assistants and other Health Services personnel.
- Maintain a high level of surgical competence and clinical currency through a position within a civilian health-care facility.
- Participate in military-skills training, field exercises, clinical education and operational-readiness activities.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of health-care policies within the CAF.
Requirements:
To be considered for direct entry as a CAF General Surgeon, candidates must:
- Hold a medical degree from a recognized institution.
- Be a member of, or hold recognized certification from, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in General Surgery.
- Hold an unrestricted licence to practise General Surgery in a Canadian province or territory.
- Maintain professional good standing and current clinical and operative competence.
- Meet the CAF’s enrolment, medical, physical-fitness, security-screening and officer-suitability requirements.
Experience in trauma surgery, critical care medicine or vascular surgery may be particularly relevant to military practice. Eligibility and current CAF specialty requirements will be confirmed by a Health Services Specialist Recruiter.
