The Opportunity
We are committed to building software that stands the test of time, and we're looking for a Principal Architect to define the technical direction of our Parks & Recreation platform.
This is a highly influential senior technical leadership role. You will lead and evolve the architectural vision across our platform, partnering closely with the CTO, Engineering Leadership, Product, and development teams to ensure our software remains scalable, secure, maintainable, and ready for future growth.
You will establish and champion engineering standards rooted in Clean Architecture, SOLID principles, DRY practices, Domain-Driven Design, and secure-by-design engineering. You'll guide the organization through complex architectural decisions, evaluate emerging technologies, and help shape how the engineering organization leverages AI-assisted software development.
Our platform processes millions of reservations and transactions annually for agencies including Parks Canada, Ontario Parks, BC Parks, and Mississippi State Parks. The systems you design will power real experiences for millions of visitors exploring some of North America's most treasured outdoor destinations.
What you'll be doing
- Lead and evolve the architectural vision for Camis's software platform, influencing the technical roadmap and ensuring alignment with business goals and product strategy.
- Define system boundaries, integration patterns, data flows, and platform-wide architectural standards.
- Partner with engineering and product leadership and the CTO to evaluate strategic technology decisions, provide architectural recommendations, and support long-term platform evolution.
- Establish standards for scalability, reliability, observability, security, performance, and cost optimization.
- Lead architectural design for the organization's most complex and highest-risk initiatives.
- Facilitate architecture reviews, design workshops, and technical decision forums across engineering teams.
- Produce solution designs, reference architectures, and architectural guidance to support delivery teams.
- Review critical technical implementations and provide architectural oversight on significant platform changes.
- Prototype and validate architectural approaches where hands-on technical validation is required.
- Evaluate, recommend, and guide the adoption of AI-assisted development practices, tools, and workflows while ensuring maintainability, security, and governance standards.
- Own and evolve architecture documentation, including Architecture Decision Records (ADRs), reference architectures, system diagrams, and technical standards.
- Define and champion enterprise-wide engineering standards covering API design, integration patterns, security, testing, and system design.
- Establish architectural standards, design patterns, and technology guidance across the organization while partnering with the CTO on significant technology adoption decisions.
- Resolve architectural disagreements through collaboration, coaching, and evidence-based decision-making.
- Mentor senior engineers, staff engineers, technical leads, and emerging architects.
- Support critical production incidents requiring deep architectural expertise and help identify long-term systemic improvements.
- Translate recurring operational challenges into architectural roadmap initiatives.
- Act as a trusted technical advisor to leadership, providing balanced recommendations on technology investments and platform strategy.
What you'll bring
- 10+ years of progressive software engineering experience at least 5 years in a formal architecture leadership role (e.g., Software Architect, Technical Architect, Staff Engineer, Principal Engineer, or equivalent)
- A recent, demonstrable history of shipping code - pull requests, design docs, architecture reviews. You're comfortable diving into unfamiliar code and unblocking hard problems without taking the work over.
- Strong delivery and operational ownership: Agile foundations (Scrum, Kanban, or hybrid), a track record of predictable delivery and honest early escalation, and hands-on experience with CI/CD, automated testing, and running production services, including on-call and postmortems.
- Working command of Clean Architecture, SOLID, DRY, and Domain-Driven Design, and a track record of holding a high engineering bar without slowing delivery to a crawl.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication - able to speak credibly with engineers, product managers, executives, and customers, and translate between them under pressure.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
Assets:
- Experience introducing, governing, or scaling AI-assisted software development practices within an engineering organization.
- Strong software development experience using .NET/C# (.NET 8+), Python, TypeScript, ASP.NET Core, Entity Framework Core, and SQL Server.
- Experience with Angular or other modern front-end frameworks for building responsive and scalable web applications.
- Hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure, including App Services, Azure Functions, Azure SQL, Storage Accounts, Key Vault, Application Insights, and Azure DevOps.
- Experience implementing Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) using Bicep, ARM, Terraform, or equivalent technologies.
- Experience designing, building, and supporting multi-tenant SaaS platforms at scale.
- Strong knowledge of event-driven architecture, messaging systems, Azure Service Bus, Event Grid, APIs, and enterprise integrations.
- Experience working with relational and NoSQL databases, including SQL Server, Progress Database, MongoDB, Azure Cosmos DB, or equivalent platforms.
- Proven ability to lead platform modernization, cloud migration, re-architecture, and digital transformation initiatives.
- Familiarity with security, compliance, and governance frameworks such as SOC 2, ISO 27001, PCI-DSS, and public-sector regulatory requirements.
- Experience in parks and recreation, reservations, permitting, ticketing, events, municipal technology, or government-focused software is considered a strong asset.
