ABOUT CANEIL
CANEIL is continuing to expand its in-house electrical engineering team to support a growing portfolio of transmission, utility, industrial, renewable energy, and mission-critical infrastructure projects throughout Canada and the United States.
We are seeking Junior/Intermediate Electrical Engineers-in-Training (EITs) to join our substation engineering team. Working alongside our senior engineers and designers, you will help deliver client-ready studies, calculations, drawings, and design packages for medium- and high-voltage substation and interconnection projects. You will develop within one of our three core areas: Power System Studies & Modeling, Substation Physical Design, or Substation Protection & Control.
This is an in-person/hybrid position based in our Edmonton, Alberta office, with a strong preference for candidates who can work in person or are willing to relocate. Remote arrangements may be considered for exceptional candidates.
WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Our ideal candidate brings 1–2 years of applicable industry experience in substation or other utility-grade electrical design, whether in physical design, protection & control, or power system studies. That said, all EITs are invited to apply and will be considered. If you are motivated to build a career in substation engineering, we want to hear from you.
FOCUS AREAS
- Power System Studies & Modeling: Support the development of power system models and short-circuit, load flow, protective device coordination, and arc flash (IEEE 1584 / NFPA 70E) studies, including data collection, model setup, results tabulation, and report preparation. Exposure to SKM PowerTools, ETAP, EasyPower, or CYME is an asset.
- Substation Physical Design: Support physical design packages for medium- and high-voltage substations, including single-line diagrams, general arrangements, plans and elevations, grounding, lightning shielding, conduit and cable routing, station service, and equipment lists and BOMs.
- Substation Protection & Control: Support P&C deliverables, including schematic and AC/DC elementary markups, wiring and interconnection drawings, cable schedules, I/O and point lists, and SCADA/communications interface documentation.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support the delivery of substation projects from approximately 15 kV through 500 kV, often from 30% design through Issued for Construction, including comment incorporation and revision control.
- Prepare and update engineering deliverables such as design basis documents, calculation packages, single-line markups, equipment lists, and cable, conduit, and termination schedules.
- Perform standard calculations for senior review, including conduit fill, voltage drop, cable sizing, AC/DC load lists, battery sizing, and grounding grid design support.
- Work closely with our CAD team to incorporate redlines, track comment resolution, and confirm engineering intent is reflected in the drawings.
- Maintain drawing indexes, deliverable registers, transmittals, revision logs, and comment-response matrices.
- Support construction and commissioning activities as required, including RFIs, as-builts, site walkdowns, and issue tracking.
- Follow CAN EIL’s QA/QC processes and maintain strong document control.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized institution.
- EIT registration with APEGA (or another Canadian provincial association), or eligibility and intent to register promptly.
- Basic understanding of power systems, substation equipment, and electrical drawing sets (single lines, schematics, schedules, layouts).
- Strong technical writing and documentation habits, including clear assumptions, traceable calculations, and revision control.
- Strong communication skills and a willingness to learn, take direction, and accept technical feedback.
- Legally eligible to work in Canada.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 1–2 years of experience in substation engineering, utility or EPC design, power system studies, or related electrical infrastructure.
- Working proficiency with AutoCAD and Bluebeam; MicroStation or AutoCAD Electrical is also beneficial.
- Exposure to SKM PowerTools, ETAP, CYME, ASPEN OneLiner, or CAPE.
- Working awareness of IEEE, ANSI, CSA, CEC, NEC, and NESC standards and utility practices.
- Exposure to protection concepts, SCADA/communications interfaces, or IEC 61850.
- Willingness to travel occasionally for site visits and client or vendor meetings.
WHY JOIN CANEIL
- Work on technically meaningful, high-impact projects for utility, transmission, industrial, renewable energy, and mission-critical infrastructure clients across Canada and the United States.
- Learn directly from experienced senior engineers and designers who are invested in your development.
- Gain broad, hands-on experience that builds toward your P.Eng. designation, with support for professional licensure.
- Join an expanding in-house team with clear opportunities for growth as your skills develop.
- Receive support for continuing education and technical development.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
- The expected base salary range for this position is $50,000–$70,000 per year, based on experience. Placement within the range will reflect relevant industry experience, technical capabilities, and overall suitability for the role.
- All candidates will be assessed individually, and compensation will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
- Comprehensive benefits for eligible full-time employees, including extended health care, dental coverage, paid vacation, and more, where applicable.
- Additional work hours are likely to be available for those who are interested.
- Hybrid work arrangements, plus professional development and continuing-education support.
HOW TO APPLY
