Original job description
Civil/Structural Engineer-in-Training | Edmonton, AB
Capital Engineering is seeking a Civil/Structural Engineer-in-Training (EIT) to join the Edmonton team. As an engineering firm, we support a variety of industrial projects across the oil and gas, refining, oilsands, and heavy industrial sectors.
This role offers the opportunity to develop your technical skills while working alongside experienced engineers and designers on projects ranging from front-end engineering through detailed design and construction support. The successful candidate will contribute to practical, fit-for-purpose engineering solutions while gaining valuable experience across the project lifecycle.
This is an office-based position, and successful candidates must be willing to work in the office rather than remotely or on a hybrid schedule.
What You’ll Do
- Assist with civil and structural engineering activities for brownfield and greenfield industrial projects.
- Assist with the design of structural steel, concrete foundations, equipment supports, pipe racks, platforms, and other industrial structures.
- Perform preliminary engineering calculations and analyses under the guidance of experienced engineers.
- Prepare and review engineering drawings, reports, specifications, and other technical documentation.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including mechanical, piping, electrical, instrumentation, and process engineering.
- Work with designers and drafting personnel to develop coordinated engineering drawings and design packages.
- Participate in site visits, field investigations, and existing facility assessments as required.
- Ensure engineering work complies with applicable codes, standards, project requirements, and quality procedures.
- Continue developing technical knowledge and professional competencies toward obtaining your P.Eng.
What We’re Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
- Eligible for or currently registered as an EIT with APEGA.
- 0–4 years of engineering experience, preferably in an industrial, EPC or consulting environment.
- Previous co-op, internship or project experience in an industrial environment is an asset.
- Foundational knowledge of civil and structural engineering principles, including steel and concrete design.
- Familiarity with applicable Canadian codes and standards, such as the National Building Code of Canada, CSA S16, and CSA A23.3, is an asset.
- Exposure to structural analysis and design software, such as STAAD.Pro or equivalent, is an asset.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, structural drawings, and 3D design environments is considered an asset.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
- A willingness to learn, take initiative, and seek guidance from experienced team members.
