Duties And Responsibilities
Reporting to both the Chair and Associate Chair for Laboratory Operations and being supervised by the Supervisor, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Laboratories, and as a member of the Technical Staff, the Mechatronics Technologist is jointly responsible for creating, operating and maintaining a safe and professional laboratory environment. This is accomplished by acquiring and maintaining proficiency in the safe operation of laboratory equipment and by performing high-quality equipment and facility repair, maintenance, modernization and fabrication, using a broad set of skills including electrical/electronic, mechanical and computer applications. The Mechatronics Technologist will contribute to the development and maintenance of undergraduate laboratory experiments and support graduate student research. The Mechatronics Technologist will be a joint participant in the University Health and Safety Program within the laboratory, and will be responsible for performing the administrative duties associated with the position. The Mechatronics Technologist will perform a supervisory/advisory role with regards to students and student employees working within the laboratory.
Qualifications
The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
- Good knowledge of analog and digital instrumentation, measurement sensors, electronics and electrical systems, computer technology, control systems and programming, and the relevant safety standards, training and specifications for the equipment under his/her care.
- Practical basic knowledge of mechatronics engineering principles, including knowledge related to solid and fluid mechanics, dynamics, thermodynamics, materials, and heat transfer.
- Excellent interpersonal and organization skills, and be able to work independently or as part of team with students, other technical staff and faculty. Ability to prioritize projects, set and achieve deadlines is required.
Education And Experience
The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
- A three-year college diploma in electrical, electronics, mechatronics, or industrial automation engineering technology from a recognized institute of technology or an accredited equivalent.
- Possess/pursue Certification as an OACETT Applied Science Technologist (A.Sc.T.) or Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.).
- A minimum of five years’ work experience in a position of similar responsibilities, preferably including a familiarity with an academic university environment involving interaction with students and faculty. Equivalences in education and experience will be considered.
