Job Description

Job Summary:

The primary duties of the Chief Steam Engineer is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the plant's steam, utility, and pressure equipment systems. Acting as the designated Chief Steam Engineer under Alberta's Safety Codes Act and Power Engineers Regulation, this position ensures regulatory compliance, operational excellence, equipment reliability, and the development of operating personnel.

The Chief Steam Engineer provides technical leadership to operations and maintenance for steam and utilities while ensuring the facility operates in accordance with ABSA requirements, company standards, and all applicable health, safety, environmental, and quality requirements.

In addition to Chief Steam Engineer responsibilities, this position provides operational support for railcar unloading activities to ensure the safe and efficient receipt of raw materials.

Duties And Responsibilities

Serve as the designated Chief Steam Engineer for the facility.
Ensure compliance with Alberta Safety Codes Act, Power Engineers Regulation, ABSA requirements, and company policies.
Maintain all required operating records, logbooks, certifications, inspections, and compliance documentation.
Maintain plant operating procedures, safe work practices, emergency procedures, and shutdown protocols.
Interface with ABSA inspectors and regulatory authorities during inspections and audits.
Provide overall supervision of the safe operation of boilers, pressure vessels, utility systems, water systems, cooling systems, and supporting plant equipment.
Monitor steam and water system performance and implement improvements to maximize efficiency, reliability, and productivity.
Review operating data, trends, and equipment performance metrics.
Lead troubleshooting and root cause investigations related to steam systems and related process equipment failures.
Protect and preserve capital assets by completing prescribed Pre-use Inspections and Preventative Maintenance.
Participate in shutdown planning, startup activities, and operational readiness reviews as it relates to steam and plant water systems.
Safely connect and disconnect railcars using proper fittings, hoses, and unloading equipment.
Monitor and control the transfer of materials from railcars to storage tanks and plant systems.
Verify railcar seals, shipping documentation, and product identification prior to unloading.
Conduct visual inspections of unloading equipment, hoses, valves, and connections to identify wear, damage, or potential safety concerns.
Track material movements and report discrepancies, quality concerns, or contamination issues.
Perform minor maintenance and assist with troubleshooting unloading equipment as required.
Coordinate unloading activities with supervisors, control room personnel, and operations teams to maintain production requirements.
Maintain housekeeping standards and ensure boiler room and rail unloading area remains clean, organized, and safe.
Complete all required operating logs, inspection checklists, and documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
Strict adherence to all Safety policy and procedures is a requirement.
Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) where required.
Protect and preserve capital assets by completing prescribed Pre-use Inspections and Preventative Maintenance.
Responsible for maintaining a clean work environment.
Follow company policies and procedures.
Represent Carlisle in a professional and courteous manner when dealing with internal & external customers.

Working Conditions

Expected work environment: Plant Operations
Reliable, consistent transportation is required
Shift work, overtime work, and weekend work may be required.
Monday – Friday, 8 am – 4:30 pm. Facilitating training on other shifts occasionally required.

Travel Requirement

This is a fully onsite position. The employee is expected to be physically present at their designated work location during scheduled hours. In-person attendance is essential for collaboration, access to onsite resources, and the performance of job responsibilities. Employees must comply with all site-specific safety, security, and conduct policies.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Used

PPE Requirements as per company policy and standards, this includes but is not limited to:

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

Minimum Grade 12 education or recognized GED
3rd Class Power Engineer’s Certificate
Prior Experience in Plant Operations
Valid Forklift license/certificate

Required Skills/Abilities/Knowledge

Must be proficient in English, both written and verbal.
Organized, with attention to detail.
A positive attitude of continuous improvement toward process operations and product quality.
Must be hardworking, reliable, punctual and able to work with minimal supervision in a safe manner.
Coach and mentor Shift Power Engineers.
Good proficiency with computer programs.
Must have good math and analytical skills.
Physically able to frequently handle awkward and heavy material.
Able to complete paperwork as required.
