Senior Java API Developer (Spring Boot / AWS / Kafka)

Position Description

CGI is seeking an experienced Senior Java API Developer to join our team and contribute to the design, development, and modernization of secure, scalable enterprise applications. In this role, you will build high-performance REST APIs and backend services using Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, and AWS while supporting mission-critical applications in production environments. Working closely with architects, developers, and cross-functional teams, you will contribute to API architecture, cloud-native development, and continuous improvement initiatives while providing technical guidance and mentorship.

This is a full-time permanent opportunity.

Your future duties and responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable REST APIs and enterprise backend services using Java and Spring Boot.
• Develop microservices and enterprise applications using Spring MVC, Spring Core, and modern Java frameworks.
• Implement event-driven integrations and asynchronous messaging solutions using Kafka.
• Contribute to domain-driven API design, Swagger/OpenAPI documentation, and API lifecycle management.
• Develop, deploy, and support cloud-native applications hosted on AWS.
• Build automated unit and integration tests using JUnit, Cucumber, REST Assured, or similar frameworks.
• Support CI/CD pipelines, containerized deployments, and development workflows using Jenkins, Maven, Docker, and Git.
• Troubleshoot complex production issues while improving application performance, scalability, availability, and reliability.
• Collaborate with architects, developers, QA teams, and stakeholders to deliver high-quality software solutions.
• Participate in code reviews, mentor team members, and promote software development best practices.
  
  

Required Qualifications To Be Successful In This Role

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Development, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years of hands-on software development experience, with strong expertise in Java backend development.
• Strong proficiency in Java 17 or Java 21, Spring Boot, Spring MVC, and Spring Core.
• Extensive experience designing and developing REST APIs and enterprise backend services.
• Hands-on experience with Apache Kafka and event-driven application architectures.
• Experience with domain-driven API design, Swagger/OpenAPI, and API lifecycle management.
• Experience developing, deploying, or supporting applications in AWS cloud environments.
• Experience with automated testing frameworks such as JUnit, Cucumber, or REST Assured.
• Experience with CI/CD tools and development workflows, including Jenkins, Maven, Docker, and Git.
• Experience supporting high-volume, mission-critical production applications.
• Strong understanding of application scalability, availability, monitoring, and performance optimization.
• Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and collaboration skills.
  
  

Assets

The following qualifications would be considered assets:

• Experience with Splunk or similar monitoring and log aggregation platforms.
• Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot.
• Experience mentoring developers and contributing to technical standards and process improvements.
  
  

CGI is providing a reasonable estimate of the pay range for this role. The determination of this range includes factors such as skill set level, geographic market, experience and training, and licenses and certifications. Compensation decisions depend on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $65,000 - $125,000 CAD. This is an existing vacancy.
