Position Description

This role is hybrid and requires you to be at our downtown Toronto and/or Client office at a minimum 2 days per week subject to change at any time.

About The Role

CGI's Financial Services team is looking for a Technical Lead to raise the engineering bar across five Agile pods delivering for a major banking client. Each pod already runs with strong process discipline under a dedicated Scrum Master - what's missing is a single technical owner accountable for code quality, architecture consistency, and cross pod reuse. This is a hands on technical leadership role, not a delivery management role: you'll spend your time on code, architecture, and mentorship, partnering with - not duplicating - the Scrum Masters who own planning, ceremonies, and velocity.

What You'll Own

Quality: Raise the engineering bar across all 5 pods - code quality, design consistency, and technical craftsmanship, measured through real metrics, not assumed.
Mentorship: Build the Dev Leads into strong technical decision makers rather than solving every problem yourself - multiply, don't do.
Collaboration: Turn 5 pods working in isolation into one engineering organization - shared components, shared patterns, shared learning.
AI enabled engineering: Champion GitHub Copilot and other AI assisted development tools to lift developer productivity and code quality across the pods, and coach teams on how to use them well.
Unblocking: Be the escalation point that unblocks design conflicts, integration issues, and tooling gaps before they become delivery risks.

How This Role Is Different From a Scrum Master

This is a technical authority role, not a delivery process role - the two are designed to complement each other, not overlap.

Tech Lead owns Scrum Master owns (unchanged)

Code quality, standards, and review rigor across all pods Sprint planning, backlog grooming facilitation

Architecture decisions and reference patterns (Angular / Node.js / Spring Boot / AWS Lambda) Velocity tracking and predictability

Technical impediment resolution (design conflicts, integration blockers, tooling gaps) Ceremonies: standups, retros, sprint reviews

Mentorship of Dev Leads and Developers (onshore + offshore) Team level health reporting to engineering leadership

Cross pod technical collaboration and reuse (shared components, APIs, libraries) Scope, capacity, and commitment management with PO

Technical risk escalation to engineering leadership Individual performance management

Your future duties and responsibilities

Architecture & Engineering Excellence

Own and evolve reference architecture and coding standards across Angular, Node.js, Spring Boot, and AWS Lambda services; ensure all 5 pods build against the same patterns.
Run code reviews for critical paths; hold Dev Leads accountable for review rigor within their pods.
Make or ratify architecture level technical decisions (service boundaries, API contracts, data flow, Lambda vs. Spring Boot placement) in collaboration with Dev Leads.
Own technical debt visibility: identify it, quantify its cost, and drive a remediation plan.

Mentorship & Talent Development

Coach all 5 Dev Leads to a consistent technical standard through 1:1 mentorship, paired problem solving, and design walkthroughs.
Mentor onshore and offshore developers directly on coding practices, testing discipline, and architectural thinking.
Build a lightweight internal enablement track (brown bags, code walkthroughs, pattern libraries) so standards scale without you becoming a bottleneck.

Cross Pod Collaboration

Identify and drive reuse of shared components, services, and libraries across pods to eliminate duplicate builds.
Run a recurring technical sync across the 5 Dev Leads to surface cross pod dependencies and shared risks early.
Represent a single technical point of view to client technology stakeholders when architecture or engineering practice is in question.

Technical Risk & Impediment Removal

Be the first escalation point for technical blockers - integration failures, environment issues, ambiguous requirements needing a design decision.
Partner with QE to close quality gaps at the code level, not just the test level.
Flag technical risk to engineering leadership early and in writing, before it surfaces as a missed commitment.

Required Qualifications To Be Successful In This Role

10+ years in full stack software engineering, with 3+ years in a technical leadership role spanning multiple teams.
Deep, hands on proficiency in Angular, Node.js, and Spring Boot (Java); working proficiency in AWS Lambda and serverless design patterns.
Experience with mobile app architecture and development (native iOS/Android, NativeScript).
Hands on experience driving AI assisted development adoption - e.g., GitHub Copilot - to improve developer productivity, code quality, or engineering velocity.
Demonstrated architecture level thinking: you've designed or governed a reference architecture for a multi team engineering organization, not just written code within one.
Experience working in a distributed onshore/offshore delivery model.
Financial services or other regulated industry delivery experience is an asset, not a requirement.

CGI is providing a reasonable estimate of the pay range for this role. The determination of this range includes factors such as skill set level, geographic market, experience and training, and licenses and certifications. Compensation decisions depend on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $95,000–$145,000. This role is an existing vacancy.
