Field Construction Manager – Fort McMurray (site based)
Position Summary
The Field Construction Manager provides leadership and oversight for the safe, efficient, and successful execution of construction activities in the Fort McMurray region. This role leads field construction teams and coordinates closely with Project Management, Engineering, Safety, Quality, Project Controls, Materials Management, and customers to deliver projects safely, on schedule, within budget, and to established quality standards.
The successful candidate brings extensive industrial construction experience, strong field leadership, and the ability to manage complex projects and multidisciplinary teams in a customer-facing environment.
This is a site-based position in Fort McMurray, Alberta, requiring regular presence at customer and project sites throughout the region.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and execute field construction activities for projects valued up to $30 million, ensuring alignment with safety, quality, cost, schedule, and customer requirements.
- Develop and implement project-specific Construction Execution Plans, Safety Activity Plans, and Inspection & Testing Plans.
- Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary field teams, including Construction Coordinators, Project Controls, Quality, Safety, Field Engineering, Project Accounting, Materials Management, and craft labour.
- Develop and manage indirect staffing and craft labour plans, adjusting resources to meet project schedules and changing site requirements.
- Develop and manage short- and long-range construction schedules, including 3-day and 30/60/90-day look-ahead plans, to maintain execution priorities and identify potential constraints.
- Facilitate construction meetings with Project Managers, customers, subcontractors, and other stakeholders to communicate progress, resolve issues, and maintain alignment.
- Provide constructability input and field expertise to Engineering and Project Management, identifying practical installation solutions and opportunities to improve execution.
- Support estimating and change-order development by providing field data related to labour, materials, productivity, installation requirements, costs, and schedule impacts.
- Oversee field execution across electric heat tracing, insulation, steam tracing, power distribution, and instrumentation, as applicable to project scope.
- Perform and/or oversee field take-offs, site measurements, piping and equipment isometric sketches, and verification of construction requirements.
- Manage pre-construction and final project walkdowns, inspections, deficiencies, turnover activities, and construction closeout.
- Partner across company functions to resolve field and project challenges and support successful project delivery.
- Step into Construction Coordinator responsibilities when required to maintain continuity of field operations.
- Support the recruitment, onboarding, deployment, and development of field employees and construction resources.
- Promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with company, customer, and regulatory requirements throughout construction execution.
What You Bring
- Degree or diploma in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related technical discipline preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive construction/project experience with relevant post-secondary education, or 8+ years of equivalent industrial construction experience.
- Demonstrated experience leading construction teams, professional field staff, subcontractors, and craft labour in an industrial environment.
- Experience managing complex construction projects, preferably within oil and gas, petrochemical, energy, or other heavy industrial environments.
- Knowledge of electric heat tracing, insulation, instrumentation, power distribution, and related industrial construction activities is an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to develop construction execution plans, resource plans, look-ahead schedules, safety plans, and quality/inspection plans.
- Strong customer-facing, communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively with clients, subcontractors, field teams, and internal stakeholders.
- Strong commercial awareness, including experience supporting estimating, change orders, cost management, labour planning, and schedule management.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, construction documentation, and field requirements.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, SAP, and relevant project/construction management systems.
- Ability to work effectively in a site-based environment and respond to changing project priorities and field conditions.
- Valid driver's licence and ability to travel to project and customer sites as required.
- This position is safety-sensitive and requires compliance with applicable company, customer, and site health, safety, and fitness-for-duty requirements.
