About Chisholm Industries
Chisholm Industries is a well-established Alberta-based mechanical contractor with nearly 50 years of experience serving commercial, institutional, healthcare, and industrial clients. Our purpose is simple but meaningful:
To grow great people, serve essential institutions and buildings with excellence, and be a force for good in our industry, our employees’ lives, and our community.
We are a growing, values-driven company built around professionalism, accountability, long-term relationships, and doing the right thing. Our projects team delivers mechanical construction, renovations, retrofits, and complex building-system work where planning, field execution, and disciplined project management matter.
The Opportunity
Chisholm Industries is seeking an experienced Project Manager to own the successful delivery of assigned mechanical construction projects from award through close-out.
This is not a coordinator role. The Project Manager is accountable for project results - safety, quality, schedule, contract compliance, customer satisfaction, cash flow, and profitability - and leads the field and administrative team required to deliver those results.
The right person is commercially aware, highly organized, comfortable in the field, and proactive about identifying risks before they become problems. You will work closely with superintendents, foremen, project coordinators, estimators, suppliers, subcontractors, consultants, general contractors, owners, and company leadership.
What You'll Own
- Project profitability - complete projects on budget without profit fade and achieve approved job-cost, labour-production, equipment, and margin goals.
- Project planning and schedule - build and maintain milestone and look-ahead schedules covering approvals, permits, long-lead items, mobilization, phases, delays, completion, and close-out.
- Cost control and forecasting - review actual versus budget performance weekly and maintain accurate monthly estimates-to-complete and estimated final costs.
- Contract and change management - understand scope, terms, notice requirements, documentation obligations, and change-order rules; ensure extra work is documented and authorized in writing.
- Procurement and buy-out - negotiate and award subcontractors and major purchases early enough to protect both schedule and budget, with required contracts, insurance, WCB, and submittals in place before work begins.
- Field leadership - lead superintendents, foremen, coordinators, subcontractors, and assigned project resources; visit active jobs at least weekly and address constraints quickly.
- Safety and quality - ensure project safety plans, inspections, quality checks, punch lists, clean-up, and workmanship standards are maintained throughout the job.
- Billing and cash flow - support accurate progress billing, approve invoices and timecards promptly, and ensure monthly billings are submitted by the contractual deadline.
- Client and stakeholder relationships - communicate proactively, run effective project meetings, resolve issues professionally, and keep stakeholders informed of schedule, cost, risks, and changes.
- Close-out - drive deficiencies, commissioning/turnover, as-builts, warranties, documentation, final financial reconciliation, and lessons learned through completion.
Your Operating Rhythm
- Weekly: review job cost and crew production, look-ahead schedule, change-order status, percent complete, safety, quality, and project constraints for every active job.
- Weekly: visit active jobs and meet with field leadership and customers as required; participate in manpower/logistics and subcontractor coordination meetings.
- Monthly: update job-cost reporting, estimate-to-complete, estimated final cost, master schedule, and progress billing.
- At key milestones: lead project hand-off, pre-job planning, customer kick-off, subcontractor coordination, pre-mobilization, and post-project lessons-learned reviews.
What You'll Need to Succeed - Minimum Qualifications
- 3 - 5+ years of project management experience in mechanical construction, HVAC, plumbing, piping, or design-build projects.
- Experience managing commercial, institutional, healthcare, industrial, or multi-family construction projects.
- Strong working knowledge of mechanical systems, construction drawings/specifications, contracts, scheduling, budgeting, cost control, and forecasting.
- Demonstrated ability to manage project financial performance, labour productivity, procurement, subcontractors, change orders, and progress billings.
- Strong leadership, organization, communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, deadlines, and stakeholders without losing control of the details.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and construction/project-management software such as Procore.
- Ability and willingness to travel locally to active project sites.
Strong Assets
- Journeyperson trade certification, engineering technology diploma, construction-management education, or related technical designation.
- Technological advance, use of project management software, specifically Procore experience will be a key strength
- Mechanical estimating experience or strong experience reviewing estimates, scopes, labour budgets, and project hand-offs.
- Experience with complex renovations, occupied facilities, institutional/healthcare environments, or design-build work.
- Experience implementing project controls, production scorecards, scheduling systems, or operational improvements.
- Familiarity with Calgary and Southern Alberta commercial construction markets, consultants, general contractors, and subcontractors.
This Role Is NOT a Fit If:
- You prefer to manage projects primarily from the office and do not want regular involvement at active job sites.
- You view budget, labour productivity, billing, or change-order management as someone else’s responsibility.
- You are reactive by nature and typically address schedule, documentation, or cost issues after they have already become problems.
- You are uncomfortable holding field leaders, subcontractors, suppliers, or customers accountable to agreed commitments.
- You are seeking an entry-level or junior project-management role.
Compensation & Benefits
- Competitive salary + performance bonus.
- Comprehensive benefits package and Health Care Spending Account.
- Life insurance and employer RRSP contributions.
- Paid time off and company holidays.
- Tuition reimbursement and professional-development support.
- Company vehicle or vehicle program, depending on role requirements.
- Safety-first work environment and supportive, team-oriented culture.
Why Join Chisholm?
- Nearly 50 years of trusted reputation in Alberta - serving clients since 1977.
- A strong backlog of meaningful commercial and institutional mechanical work.
- A growing business investing in stronger systems, better project controls, and leadership development.
- Direct access to ownership and senior leadership, with the ability to influence how projects are delivered.
- Clear growth opportunities as the company scales.
- A culture focused on people, professionalism, continuous improvement, and doing the right thing.
- The opportunity to take real ownership of results instead of simply administering someone else’s process.
Why the Right Person Chooses This Role
If you are an experienced mechanical Project Manager, you may be thinking:
- “I want ownership and autonomy, but I also want clear expectations and accountability.”
- "I want to run projects properly - with strong planning, documentation, and field leadership.”
- "I want to be measured on results, not politics.”
- "I want to work somewhere that cares about margin and execution without sacrificing relationships or quality.”
- "I want to help build a stronger projects operation, not just inherit the same old way of doing things.”
This role is designed for that kind of Project Manager.
Who This Role Is For
This role is a strong fit for someone who takes ownership, plans ahead, enjoys being close to the work, and can balance commercial discipline with strong relationships. You should be comfortable making decisions, following through, and bringing structure to complex projects.
The ideal candidate values accountability, teamwork, safety, quality, professionalism, and continuous improvement - and takes pride in delivering predictable project outcomes.
What Makes This Role Different
- You will have meaningful ownership of projects from hand-off through final close-out, not just responsibility for paperwork or meeting administration.
- Project success is clearly defined: safe work, satisfied clients, clean documentation, on-time execution, strong cash flow, and delivery of the approved project margin.
- Chisholm is actively strengthening its project-management systems and operating discipline, giving the right person an opportunity to help shape a scalable projects operation.
- You will work in a company that values long-term relationships and doing the right thing while still expecting strong financial and operational performance.
