Position Details: The Program Supervisor is responsible for ensuring the safe and effective operation of The Nook Children’s Program, a nonprofit after-school, camps, and family support program in Toronto’s West End. The Program Supervisor oversees planning, coordination and facilitation of daily arts, literacy, recreation, and social justice programming in partnership with front-line staff members, volunteers, students, partners, and local families.
Starting in 1997 as a children’s drop-in program in Christie Pits Park, The Nook has become a diverse and inclusive program for school-aged children in Toronto. We are a supportive community-based resource for both families and children outside of school and home. The Program Supervisor is a critical part of sustaining and developing The Nook.
This is a full-time position (37.5 hours per week) with eligibility for group health and dental benefits upon successful completion of the probationary period.
The Program Supervisor reports to the Children’s Program Manager and supervises 3 to 12 front-line staff throughout the year. Regular working hours are Monday to Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Hours may vary based on operational needs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Coordinate the planning and delivery of the Afterschool Program for students in JK to grade 6, meeting Ontario’s After-school Program guidelines and related legislations, and the planning, delivery of camps and special events.
- Supervise after-school programstaff, students, and volunteers. Plan, provide and support staff, student, and volunteer training, and communicate with the Program Manager about emerging training needs.
- Implement and facilitate creative and effective arts, literacy, and recreation activities, as well as social justice and nutrition activities that engage children and families, and respect the various learning styles and empathy, conflict resolution, leadership, and life skills.
- Maintain appropriate records and statistics, complete program reports including surveys and interviews as per funder requirements.
- Effectively manage resources and work within the program budget. Identify and secure cost-effective program materials, equipment, and resources, including art supplies, sports equipment, and snacks.
- Perform outreach and promotion for all Nook program elements including social media, stakeholders, and community partners.
- Maintain a program space that is clean, safe, organized and welcoming to children and families. This includes communicating appropriately any physical space issues and act within a safety-first approach.
- Maintain health and safety standards related to food storage, preparation, and provision for children and families.
- Liaise with parents/guardians on issues of concern or relevance to their children’s participation in the program, provide support and problem solving, and make appropriate decisions in consultation with the Program Manager related to the Nook’s capacity to care for children who engage in unsafe behavior.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Key Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in Child and Youth Care (CYC), Social Service Work (SSW), Social Work (BSW), Recreation, Education, or related fields.
- Minimum two (2) years of experience working with children and youth in a childcare, after-school, camp, or community-based setting.
- Minimum one (1) year of supervisory experience.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR certification.
- Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check required prior to employment.
- Experience planning and facilitating programs for children and families is an asset.
We recognize the importance of a diverse workforce and encourage applications from equity seeking groups. Accommodation is available on request for candidates taking part in all aspects of the selection process.
