Original job description

Citi is hiring a Head of Application Development at the Senior Vice President level to lead enterprise-scale CRM and financial platform engineering within the Institutional Services Group (ISG), a key division of Citi's Institutional Clients Group (ICG). In this role, you will architect and drive the delivery of mission-critical, high-availability systems that serve global institutional clients - combining deep technical leadership with hands-on engineering excellence. This is an opportunity to shape the technology direction of a platform that disrupts industry norms through innovation and cross-functional collaboration.

Responsibilities

Lead the architecture and development of enterprise-grade CRM and financial applications, ensuring 24/5 availability and alignment to business objectives across global institutional clients.
Design and deliver loosely coupled, microservices-based solutions using Java, Spring Boot, and RESTful architecture - driving the migration of monolithic platforms to cloud-ready, scalable architectures.
Own the engineering roadmap for application stability, quality, and functionality, setting and meeting service level expectations across production environments.
Automate the release pipeline to achieve zero-downtime deployments across the full application platform, reducing operational risk and accelerating delivery cycles.
Act as the primary technical liaison between business users, internal technology teams, and external vendors - translating complex requirements into clear, actionable engineering solutions.
Mentor and coach a cross-functional engineering team of 20 or more, fostering technical growth, knowledge sharing, and high-performance delivery culture.
Assess technology and business risks during decision-making, ensuring solutions adhere to applicable policies, regulatory standards, and safeguard client assets and firm integrity.

Required Qualifications & Skills

10+ years of experience developing and managing enterprise CRM applications, with at least 10 years focused on solution architecture for high-availability financial systems.
Proven experience leading and managing engineering teams of 20 or more professionals across varied technical disciplines.
Expert-level proficiency in Java (version 10 or above) and the broader Spring ecosystem, including Spring Boot, Spring Data, JPA, Maven/Gradle, WebSockets, and Test-Driven Development (TDD).
Hands-on experience designing and developing solutions using Message-Oriented Middleware technologies such as Kafka, TIBCO, and Apache MQ over SSL.
Deep knowledge of microservices architecture patterns, Object-Oriented Design, and Gang of Four (GoF) design patterns - with demonstrated experience migrating monolithic applications to microservices in on-premises or cloud environments.
Working knowledge of web service standards including REST, SOAP, JSON, JAXB, and JAX-WS, as well as message formats such as XML, JSON, and Protobuf.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience in a relevant engineering or technology discipline.

Beneficial Skills & Qualifications

Experience architecting enterprise-wide solutions that span multiple business domains, with the ability to communicate complex technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders.
Demonstrated ability to re-prioritize rapidly in dynamic environments, balancing long-term architecture goals with immediate delivery demands.
A track record of fostering technical learning and knowledge-sharing practices within large engineering teams.

What We Offer

At Citi, you will join a global technology organization with over 200 years of financial expertise, where senior engineering leaders have real ownership, strategic influence, and the platform to build solutions that matter. ISG Technology offers a high-performance environment where your contributions directly shape the products and services delivered to some of the world's most significant institutional clients.

Hybrid working model with 3 days in the office and 2 days working remotely, providing structure alongside flexibility.
Strategic leadership ownership with the autonomy to shape architecture decisions and engineering direction at enterprise scale.
Access to Citi's robust learning and development programs, continuously updated to reflect the most current technology practices and leadership capabilities.
Long-term career mobility across a global organization, with genuine opportunities to grow laterally and vertically across Citi's technology and business functions.
A collaborative, performance-driven team environment where technical excellence and delivery impact are recognized and rewarded.
Family support benefits, including dedicated programs for parents returning to work and those balancing caregiving responsibilities.
A global platform operating across markets worldwide, offering exposure to complex, high-stakes technology challenges at institutional scale.

Build the next generation of institutional financial technology - apply now and bring your engineering leadership to one of the world's most consequential banking platforms.
