Original job description

Archived listing. The details below describe a past opening.

Citi is looking for a Senior Java Engineer to design and deliver high-performance backend systems at the intersection of enterprise software development and applied AI tooling. Based within Citi's Technology organization, this role offers the opportunity to build production-grade Java applications using Spring Boot and MongoDB while actively integrating modern AI-assisted development practices into everyday engineering workflows. You will operate with meaningful autonomy, owning application modules end-to-end and contributing to the standards that shape how the team builds and ships software.

Responsibilities

Design, develop, and deploy robust backend applications using Java and Spring Boot, with MongoDB as the primary data store, ensuring performance, reliability, and maintainability at scale.
Build and maintain RESTful APIs and microservices that meet defined business requirements, translating complex functional needs into clean, efficient backend solutions.
Own and deliver discrete application modules from requirements through to production, maintaining accountability across the full software development lifecycle including analysis, design, construction, testing, and release.
Identify and surface technical and delivery risks early, proposing concrete mitigation plans to keep projects on track.
Integrate and champion AI-assisted development tools - including GitHub Copilot, Devin, Claude, and Codex - to accelerate delivery and improve code quality across the team.
Define and uphold engineering standards and operational processes, contributing to a consistent and high-quality development practice.
Apply sound technical judgement when assessing the impact of decisions on system integrity, data quality, and business outcomes, escalating issues transparently where needed.

Required Qualifications & Skills

5+ years of backend software engineering experience, with a focus on Java application development in commercial or enterprise environments.
Deep expertise across the Spring Framework ecosystem, including Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Data JPA, and Spring Security.
Demonstrated ability to design and implement RESTful APIs and microservices architectures that are scalable, secure, and well-documented.
Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and tooling, including Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, Docker, Kubernetes, and Maven or Gradle.
Solid command of Git version control and established branching strategies such as Gitflow, applied in a team delivery context.
Practical experience working with AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Devin, Claude, Codex, or equivalent, as part of a professional engineering workflow.
Familiarity with web service standards including REST and SOAP, and data formats including XML and JSON.

Beneficial Skills & Qualifications

Frontend development experience using Angular, enabling collaboration with full stack teams and contribution to end-to-end feature delivery is nice to have.
Experience managing or contributing to software delivery projects, with the ability to coordinate workstreams and meet shifting deadlines effectively.
Exposure to project management or consulting methodologies that support structured delivery in complex engineering environments.
A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field - or equivalent practical experience.

What We Offer

At Citi, you will work on technology that operates at genuine global scale, within a team that values engineering craft, clear ownership, and continuous improvement. This is a role where your backend expertise will have direct impact - not just on internal systems, but on how Citi delivers for its clients worldwide.

A hybrid working arrangement with 3 days in the office and 2 days working remotely, giving you flexibility alongside meaningful in-person collaboration.
The opportunity to work at the forefront of AI-augmented software engineering, using tools like GitHub Copilot, Devin, and Claude as a standard part of how the team builds.
Clear scope for technical growth, with exposure to complex, high-stakes backend systems and the autonomy to shape how they evolve.
Access to learning and development resources that support progression across both technical depth and broader engineering leadership.
A performance-driven environment where your contributions are visible, your ownership is real, and the problems you solve carry meaningful consequences.
Competitive compensation and a benefits package designed to support your financial wellbeing, health, and long-term career at one of the world's leading financial institutions.

Apply now to bring your backend Java expertise to Citi and help shape the next generation of high-performance, AI-augmented financial technology
