Original job description

Help connect the City of Kelowna’s priorities with the people they matter to. As a Communications Consultant, you will bring senior-level expertise to a team focused on customer service, community and business engagement. You will turn complex issues into clear, purposeful communications that connect organizational goals with audience needs.

Your primary focus will be internal and external strategic communications. You will provide trusted advice, develop well-researched communications plans and create the materials that bring them to life. Drawing on political acumen and sound judgment, you will anticipate issues, recommend approaches and take ownership of your work from planning through delivery and evaluation. You will assess effectiveness, apply what you learn and continuously improve your programs. This is a strategic, hands-on role: alongside advising senior leaders, you will write and edit content and coordinate activities such as awareness campaigns, crisis plans, marketing campaigns, and events.

Qualifications:

You bring post-secondary education in communications, public relations or journalism and substantial, progressively responsible experience in corporate communications. Your work demonstrates that you can independently lead complex, sensitive communications initiatives, advise senior leaders with confidence and deliver results. You can share examples that show how your judgment and critical thinking have deepened through increasingly challenging work, how you have solved problems and how you have used research and evaluation to improve outcomes. Exceptional writing, political acumen, relationship-building and project management skills are essential, along with experience supporting change. You take accountability for your recommendations, commitments and results, balance competing priorities and maintain close attention to detail. You are equally willing to shape strategy and handle the small, practical tasks that make it succeed. Experience in government and/or advising senior leaders is an asset.

Help create Kelowna as a City of the Future. Our diverse and dynamic team strives to innovate to make things better, work as one team, serve proudly and lead responsibly. Live, work and play in one of Canada’s fastest growing cities. Kelowna boasts miles of lake access, public areas and outdoor recreation opportunities, a vibrant downtown and cultural scene, healthy and connected neighbourhoods. With modern technology and an ever-changing virtual landscape, we may be willing to consider applicants who want to work from home, provided you reside in the Okanagan region, with the ability to come into the office, as required.

Grow your career in an organization that supports employee work-life balance and career and professional development. This exempt position offers a salary range of $89,600 to $104,500 annually, employer-paid comprehensive benefits, an earned day off program, paid vacation and one of Canada’s top pension plans.

The City of Kelowna is committed to being an organization that values and reflects its community’s diverse population, and to fostering an equitable, inclusive and progressive work environment where everyone can be their authentic self and feels a sense of belonging.
